    What's the RRS like off-road?

    Like the topic says...

    Apart from watching Clarkson run away from a tank and reading a few UK magazine articles, I don't know what the RRS is really like off-road.

    I'm thinking that if RCL does finally release a version that covers the RRS and D3 then I might seriously look at the RRS TDV6 or TDV8 to replace my D2a Td5. Thinking ahead here as I'm planning for long service leave in about 18 months and a big trip.

    Barry (Redback) often goes out with a RR Sport. He's also one of our customers & he takes it pretty much anywhere (not the real extreme stuff though).

    One thing to consider though it the Sport has less storage space than the Disco3. It's on a shorter platform & the rear end profile doesn't help either. My boss currently has a Sport as his drive car & he's noticed a big difference in this way from his usual D3 drive car.

    Hi dm_td5, my wife and I have had a few test drives with RRSs ( as a day loaner while my RR or D3 was being serviced ) and had a very small play around off road with one.

    I think it would probably be better off road the either the RR or D3 in many situations BUT as pointed out by Scouse, the RRS is MUCH smaller that the D3 and although a really fun vehicle to drive, the novelty soon wears off and the last time I had one as a loaner, it just sat in the driveway until the D3’s serves was finished.

    When I get one as a loaner for the D3 ( wife’s drive ) now, my wife takes the RR rather than drive the RRS.

    For long trips, the D3 is far superior in comfort and ride and I am sure if you were planning to do a lot of on the road driving, the D3 will most definitely be the better vehicle.

    Interesting, I hadn't considered the long haul driving as an issue (then again I haven't sat in one yet). The space I could probably live with as I doubt it would be as bad as the D1 was.

    Going to try and have a look at one in Melbourne in a few weeks time, and maybe the D3 too.

    I had a brief chat with an RRS driver on the island once,, (his mate had a black D3) said the cab was much smaller,,

    Hi again dm_td5, if you are going to look at an RRS, try sitting in both a D3 and an RRS, the space limitations of the RRS are not just in the cargo area. I’m 6’1” and the lack of leg room is significant, both length wise and side to side room and the reason for my comments about the D3 being a much better choice for long distance driving.

    If your looking for a fun machine to drive, I would have to say that I have driven few vehicles, 4x4s or otherwise, that are as fun to drive as the RRS, far more so than either the D3 or the new RR. The cab of the RRS is like a cockpit and they handle something unreal when you want to have some fun on road but as I posted, the novelty soon wares off and the D3’s cab space and smoother ride are way WAY out in front.

    Both the RRS and D3 are a quantum leap from the D2 but the D3 is just that much better again and the cost savings can be better spent on better options for the D3.

    Yep. from my experience the RRS is the most 'fun' vehicle of the lot and imo the most capable off road of the 3 (RR, LR3 & RRS).

    But it is small and not ideal for a tourer.

    The RRS is awesome off-road...

    ...but what do you want to compare it to???

    Also... Is the question about an off-roader or a tourer???

    Compared to the D3, it is 6" shorter, smaller cabin, slightly more overhang front & rear and the trim on the bottom of the doors can sometimes ping off... My weapon of choice these days is the TDV6 D3 Auto but the RRS TDV8 comes a close second.

    The reason I ask about off road is that where I live there is 680km of dirt track to get out of town. Most weekends (and often some nights) I take either my Defender or Disco off road, mainly on bush tracks but not always, also theres lots of opportunity for beach driving.

    I'm also interested in replacing my D2a Td5 with something for doing a 2 or 3 month trip with, probably towing an off-raod camper, but otherwise it would be a daily drive and be used on dirt more than sealed roads.

    My initial thoughts were V8 would be nice and that there isn't that much seperating the RRS and D3 on paper in size, weight etc. Of course I don't know what they are physically like to drive and from what everyones said it is quiet significant in terms of room.

    I think I'll leave anything until I can drive one. All I do know is that price wise the D3 definitely wins out over the RRS and as for the RR... I notice its list price is now from $140,900.

    Of course there's also going to be the 07 Defender later this year... I'm hoping to get to the UK before its released here so I might drive one then.

    I'm fortunate in that I get to drive them all on a regular basis...

    For a daily drive... RRS. The space for the driver & passengers is about the same. Compared to the D3, you loose a bit of rear head room and you have a smaller boot. All the controls are the same, just in a slightly different position. For a trip & towing a camper trailer, the RRS should be fine.

    Where the D3 wins out is that it's much more versatile. E.g. With the rear seats folded away, you've got a flat load space of nearly 2M in length.

    I suggest taking both out for a test drive & see which one you prefer.
