I don't think you would want to be paying much more than $1000.
I just bought a 1987 4 door with RWC for $2500.
You will have problems with the 4.4 on standard carby as the carby will not suck enough air. You can use the Stromberg WW Carby but even with this you will be struggling. I have a 4.6 running a WW carby and I just cant ge enough air and it is alwys rich and uses HEAPS of fuel.
This is the reason many convert to LPG so look out for one on LPG....or you can get it done and claim the $2k rebate.

Old rangies r good but have their problems with rust and some minor electrical dramas headlights can be a pain if larger than std globes r fitted best fix is to rewire the buggers rite and you have no dramas ...
As for the 4.4 there great but need an external oil cooler to keep em happy and a good rad to keep the temp down ...
As for the carbys go for a holly and mod it to sute the motor i run a holly on my 4.4 and have modded it to run rite on hills and i get good econ for what it is ....
Cheers

imho : have a good look at the plugs to try and determine if the carbs are functioning correctly, expensive rebuild if not.
if the plugs are brand new be wary, most other stuff is do-able DIY
big oil leaks?
rear aframe ball joint?
excessive play in drive shafts?
does it over heat in low range if ran for more than 30 mins or so?
excessive rust: front footwells, under spare wheel, rear tailgates, door frames, sills, (pull the rubber back to check)
leaky steering box?
PS pump ok?
other stuff :general wear on rubber bushes/mounts
