That should tell him something then, shouldn't it?

It's worth whatever price the market will bear, and if others are asking and getting more, then it's worth more than the book says. He might not like it or want to pay it, but he has the choice not to buy! When I was looking for one 4 months ago (And there were no late model Defenders to be seen anywhere) I'd have thought I'd got a bargain even at the very top end of the book value quoted....

He reckons he got onto Redbook who say their prices are from feedback from the trade but we all know how trustworthy carsalesman are so maybe they don't/can't tell the truth even amongst themselves!

This bloke probably wants one that's never left the blacktop but has every conceivable extra attached, always kept under cover with very low klms for good measure and at a super discount price just for him.

I want to sell mine (but the cook doesn't want me too!)but aren't going to give it to some cheapskate or worse still get screwed by the above mentioned stealers who'll point out every speck of red dust and use it to discount the price by an extra grand or two.

He's off overseas on a very lucrative (his words) contract for a month so I'll just have to wait and see if he's managed to come to terms with the reality of it all or not and decides to spend a bit more and buy mine.

Has there ever been any really cheap good Defenders around at these low prices I wonder?
    Happy LRing.

It's a tough one this. When we were looking for one, there were a few fenders around. We knew we could buy a new one for mid 40's.

At the same time there were any number that were available. Most people were asking high 30's and even the occasional low 40's. The redbook at the time was saying 29-32.

There were a number of people holding out for the big dollars, many of two that had been waiting a long time.

I remember offering one guy who had 39 on his 36. He knocked me back. About this time we made the decision that the new car offered better value and went that way.

The guy I offered 36 to ... well the last time I saw it advertised it was at 32 and the car disappeared shortly thereafter.

It's interesting. The defender does hold it's value very well. Sometimes I think the owners can get a bit greedy though.

Having said that I know a guy who just got 10k more than redbook for a Elise. Clearly it does happen.

We eventually had Pickles auctions / valuers put a value on the vehicle, recognising that it had essentially been rebuilt. The specialist insurer was happy with that. As far as the mainstream are concerned is a 10 year vehicle is just that, regardless of what you do to it......

    Defender prices.

Right on the button Dirty Dawg. I got a '97 300Tdi with reasonable kays a couple of months ago.
I think I paid a bit over the top for it (proves the point that a vehicle will fetch whatever someone is willing to pay) and have spent quite a bit on Maxi axles, new tyres etc.
Probably spend a bit more as well but feel much happier there's no damn computer lurking under my seat!
I know it (the Td5) never missed a beat before or since but I can't stand things going wrong you've absolutely no control over.
Fingers crossed that something I've missed doesn't pop up and break on me now!
Now where can I advertise on this site, I'm blowed If I can find it!
