    Central locking for 300tdi Defender?

    G'day all,

Has anyone managed to successfully fit central locking to a 300tdi Defender 110?

I was asking suppliers about it today and after having a look at the vehicle they reckon they could do it but wouldn't warrant the work because the clearances when the doors close are too tight and would potentially (especially when 4wd'ing) damage the wires...

Similar stuff was said about alarm system - it could only do 70% because the back doors don't have any door light sensors on them which the alarm system(s) use to detect if a door had been opened....

Curious to see what success other people have had and what model of equipment they used?

I have a Uniden 1600 alarm and a Dick wit (sorry Smith) central lock system. It takes a whole weekend to do but keyless entry is wonderful.

I used the same c/lock gear in my first 110 and after 4 years still worked fine.

I have not fitted them to a defender, but to quite a few other vehicles, some easy, some a little tougher.

But I am sure that a suitable system could be used and installed properly that worked all the time - even 4wdriving !!!!

With the alarm - it would take very little time to fit a trip switch to the rear door - a standard one could be fitted or if you are bothered about drilling holes a magnetic contact switch can be used.

There is always more than one way to skin a cat.

I fitted both an alarm and remote central locking to my Defender a couple of years ago. There's no particular difficulty, you just need to get the position of the solenoids right and the correct bend of the actuator rods.

There's a few photos of my central locking install in the gallery here:

Think someone is telling you a pork pie. I've had one Defender and a 120" and could see the road through the places where the doors missed the seals on both.

Ah, maybe they couldn't install due to an air gap problem.

    Cheers

My 110 has a rear light sensor on the rear door - looks factory too.

It is an unfamiliar vehicle with unconventional structure and they don't want the job. There is no problem fitting central locking and/or alarm as others have indicated. However, it will be quite expensive if you are paying someone by the hour to work out how to do it. I fitted mine myself without any great difficulty, although it took quite a while. The biggest problem I have had was what they predicted - broken wires to the doors, nothing to do with off road. But this can be avoided by making sure that as the door opens and shuts the wires are twisted not kinked.

On our defender the rear door switch is actually in the body near the hinge, and the door pushes the switch.

I think they are talking about the side rear doors, they don't have switches as standard. I fitted the long ones from jaycar and some spacers on the side of the door panel. there are holes already drilled in the pillar that the switches can fit into.

I think they mean there is not much room inside the door. It is a tight fit on the front doors (the panel bulges a few mm) but it can be done.
