Hey I'm all for your light set up, it looks good.
But like you say a picture says a thousand words, and see that intense white light around the light pods,, that's what annoys some people,, like really bright dash lights.

I am not knocking your set, up just discussing different aspects. To discuss what can be considered on this subject. Rally teams spend a lot of time avoiding the light you can see around the edge of the lens, if the light pods are fitted on the bonnet or roof. Its the same distraction that occurs on polished bull bars, you know how people matt out the bars to try and reduce the glare,, not from the beam. Its also why the 03 Disco's have the edges of there tail lights blacked out, it reduces the side glare of the tail light lighting up the spare and rear glass which reduces the rear vision at night like on my 01 Disco. On our aircraft at work we place much detail on this issue as the pilots night vision can be reduced by errant light. Its why the stars always look brighter out in the bush, because there is no light pollution to affect our night vision.
Again not a negative intended here, and I understand that the light doesn't bother you so that is great. In fact if you could make one that was shrouded I would consider buying one off you myself cause where you have them mounted looks a treat, much better than the mickey mouse ears I had sticking up from my roof rack.

Any day time shots so we can see the setup itself.

And ps,, bugger the "legality" as long as the "reality" is safe and usefull and your happy. if we worried about the legalities I reckon most of us would be driving some fairly boring vehicles. Hell the IPF lights fitted to my ARB bullbar are actually illegal by ADR's because they protrude beyond the bullbar, and the 130 globes are not for on road use, so thats also illegal, and the rear facing spot lights are illegal etc etc. so where do you draw the line" glass houses and all that.

er Duff & DB read it again, John & I were not calling roof lights ****** lights we were talking low mounted fog/driving lights. Manufacturers have gone to great lengths to develop headlights with good light patterns that don't dazzle oncoming traffic, so that fools can drive around using their aux lights which ARE illegal to be run if it is not foggy and for good reason, they do not have "cutoffs", so if they are aimed to be usefull 55w lights ARE dazzling to oncoming drivers and if they are aimed so low as to not bother anyone you're not looking far enough ahead (using those lights instead of headlights is also a step backward for same reasons). If they are bright white light they are useless in fog anyway. I don't have roof lights but I don't have a problem with them.

and that is the reason why you see a lot of hilux and even country commodore utes and whatnot with the lights actually turned around or laid back.
Most of these guys turn the lights around to keep the bug splatter off the lens and to eliminate the chance of getting it smashed by flying rocks. After all, the guys with the bundy stickers love their circlework...

Regarding pedantic transport inspectors an "legality" and "reality". The transport inspectors are doing their job, which is to apply the rules as made by politicians. The rules apply to everybody. If you don't like them, lobby your elected servants to change them. I grant there are rules that appear stupid and un-necessary and some inspectors are over the top. As to "legality", keeping it legal helps not to draw the crabs on all of the rest of us who may be considered irresponsible 4WD hoons, with dangerous illegally modified vehicles, because of the actions of a few. Truckies in general hate roof mounted lights as they are sitting at that level and cop an eyeful. I know truckies who have Unity manouverable spotlights that they say are good for pointing right in the driver's eye of an oncoming vehicle with offensive lights and/or drivers who will not dip lights. Gives them a taste of their own medicine. Unity's are useful against following vehicles that don't dip lights, as they can be turned right around and aimed at the driver behind.

I aint going to fight with you on this one, but I'll try to find an article that showed that white fog lights were as effective using modern lenses.

    I was shocked too...

Ok I'll stand corrected on that point. That's obviously a specific make & model of light, not neccesarily fitted to all modern cars?

I would not be to sure. Over here in WA you can be booked for having these auxillary 55w driving lights on that are not switched by high beam. The problem is most cars that have them have them wired into the normal lighting circuit and come on when ligts are turned on on low beam. The stupid thing is they come out of the factory like this and must have met ADRs. We were puled up in my brother in laws HSV for this very reason, having his headlight on during the day with the aux lights. Like we said to the copper you guys have been asking people to drive with their lights on on country roads and dull days, now you are going to book us for doing it? Does not make a lot of sense. What is annoying is the idiots that upgrade the bulb wattage and even on low beam you are blinded. Was a big issue over here a couple of years ago and every 2nd person was being ooked. Is a concern cause the wifes Stato has them standard.

Fog lights not being used in fog/sleet are illegal...

However... 55w Aux driving lights are not against the law.

I have no issues with driving lights if aimed correctly etc...

Quoted verbatim from Qld. Transport regs."Fog lights must be capable of being switched on and off independently of any headlights but must only be able to be switched on when the parking lights are on. Fog lights must not be used except in fog or mist or under other atmospheric conditions which restrict visibility."

Long range driving lights are called "additional headlights" by Qld. Transport and "must extinguish automatically when low beam is selected."
