Bit outspoken there mate ... I will let that one slide as my high intellect is not able to determine if you are insulting me or just dumping on the whole G4 process. Bare in mind, whoever goes to the prelimns have to win the weekend to "earn" the right to go to the finals. I can assure you Guy Andrews, Alina McMaster, Tom Landon Smith and John Jacoby .. all Aussies who made it through will not match your "derogatory" eight point profile. Check your head before you lose it!

If I ran the challenge the final test would be to construct the winning vehicle, first to do so correctly wins.

To get back to the subject matter .. the G4 is not a Camel Trophy. It is a marketing event with the intention of attracting customers to the brand. A camel trophy will not appeal to a bigger audience, especially in the current political environment. The G4 does.

Sorry you took offence to the high society comment. It wasn't intended. As you say I do upset people sometimes, as an ameateur bushwalker and person who enjoys orienteering, I admire what you do.
As for Ace? Well if you believe he's a good bloke, it's not my endeavour to burst your bubble, but remember everyone has a dark side, even top blokes.
As for the event no it isn't the Camel Trophey, the camel trophey showed the general public what LandRovers can do (this is why they still sell the DVD's) and yes admittedly they have a cult following (4WD owners who take their vehicles 4wding). The G4 whilst the event is impressive does not show what Land Rovers product can do. It shows the public a race between elite athletes. The cars are simply there for product placement, just like the Land Rover horse jump at Badminton, right after the Rolex one. Yes a horse can jump a Defender's bonnet, why are they there instead of a cheaper sign? Strictly for advertising and publicity reasons. Can anyone tell me what Rolex has to do with one day eventing? About the same as Land Rover has to do with it, and the G4 challenge. Sponsorship, product placement, and a chance to capture the attention of the members of society who can afford their products.

- Yes I watched the G4 challenge.
- Yes I own a Land Rover (although mine is muddy and scratched)
- Yes I own a Rolex (although mine Rolex starts with a W and came from a street market in Bandkok and was bought as a joke)
No I am not stereotypical new Land Rover material.
Thanks for your "insightful" comments ... I agree the G4 is a publicity stunt (marketing tool) .. the Camel Trophy was exactly the same. Land Rovers involvement in both is purely to promote the brand and sell vehicles. The only difference is the type of event ... appropriate to the larger audience at the time.

I agree the G4 does not show what the product can do .. but to be honest .. with the current crop of vehicles and the market they are going after, people don't really care if the vehicles are great offroad. We care .. but we are a very small minority.
Land Rover's involvement with events like the G4 and showjumping is to align themselves with an "image". People see themselves all toffed up next to the show jumping arena or abseiling down a cliff, they might never do it themselves but purchasing a new landy gives them that image. Whether we like it or not .. Land Rover is now a prestige product and marketed accordingly. They don't want the "Camel Man" to represent their product because the company executive who occasionally goes for a road cycle and lives in Mosman (potential RR buyer) cannot relate to Camel Man.
The fact that land Rovers are still made to be superior offroad is because it sells as much vehicles to you and me (who use them offroad) as it does to Mr. Mosman. Again, it's the image that comes with the product.
I use your example of Rolex and Land Rover being involved with showjumping at Badminton. It is putting the brand into the faces of their target audience. Showjumping is an elitest sport, only for the rich .... that fits Rolex to a tee. Land Rover is a luxury 4WD able to tow a horse float up a slippery hill ... perfect target audience. I am ranting on about this but I run events and are constantly looking for new sponsors. Products or services doesn't have to relate directly to the event but as long as the event attracts the target market of the sponsor .. they will be interested.

Personally I think LR are scared of running a Camel trophey type event, simply because todays lineup of vehicles are not built to the standard of the older ones and are simply through away vehicles after the warrantee period (good for business). Upcoming Defender included, they simply could not go through the hell the Camel men put their vehicles through and not be complete writeoffs at the end. Now imagine the look on a Camel mans face if the airbags deployed mid event in his D3, RR, upcoming Defender or RRS.
I know the Camel tropheys wrecked a few vehicles, I'd bet $100 not one standard unmodified LR on todays market could meet the expectations placed upon them from these past events and survive in a drivable state (this is without a testbook at hand). The Camel was for 4wd's, the G4 is for SUV's, elite athletes and American style reality TV loving public.
