Now they were saying the reason for this is NOT due to an increase the price of crude, but the price of gasoline (owing to refinery outages in the US). Does this mean that Diesel will (or should) stay cheaper? It has been consistently 5c/l cheaper here in Brisbane for the last few weeks but I just put this down to lower northern hemisphere heating oil demand now it's summer over there.

Not necessarily - it is likely the same refinery produces diesel as well!

The problem is that there is very little spare refinery capacity worldwide so that any outages are likely to cause shortages; and with refinery margins being very slim, and the NIMBY factor alive and well, nobody is rushing to build refineries. Even worse, tightening specifications of fuel, including reducing sulphur in diesel, means what money is available is being used to upgrade existing refineries, to produce these fuels not to increase output. In fact these outages are probably shutdowns to do just that!

In Melbourne in the last few weeks petrol has gone as high as $1.39 per litre while diesel has stayed at around $1.25.
This is the first time in ages diesel has remained below petrol. Wonder how long it will last.

Hasn't moved here yet, UPL still sitting around 129c, but if drive an hour north and over the border, the old man says about 112c...grrrrr.....

But as soon as the local monopoly hears the news they'll be on to it like a seagull on to a sick prawn...

Well the news report was going on specifically about gasoline so I assumed it was mainly "light sweet" crude refineries that were out of commission. In any case, I stand by my comment that the lower diesel price at the moment may be due to less heavy-crude demand in the northern hemisphere. I seem to recall reading about this annual cycle somewhere.

Diesel is still available around Brisbane today for 116-117c per litre. Petrol is generally over 120c.
