    Pauline Hanson tyre sizes???

Please explain??? I have GG's on my Fender from new, 235/85 R16. I know the 16 stands for 16" wheel, but can someone explain wtf 235/85 means and how come some sizes are in mm and others in inches?AND how do you work out appropriate sizes in different brands that will fit your rims??? Also any other info that I may have missed, apologies for my stupidity.

235 is the nominal tread width measured in millimetres. 85 is the sidewall height (profile) expressed as a percentage of the tread width. You are right, 16 is the rim size (diameter) in inches.

They are all measured that way, just because...

Brace yourself for a change coming soon, all EU measurements will soon be metric by law.

There are 4 tyre sizing standards/systems. P-metric, US, Imperial and Metric

You have P-metric - rim size in inches, section width in mm (235mm), and sidewall height as a percentage of section width (85%).

The 235 is the width in millimetres, the 85 is the aspect ratio. Basically it is 85% of it's width, so is reasonably tall. The doof-doof cars you see with tyres that look like they are painted on the rims are about a 35 aspect ratio.

Why some in inches and some in millimetres? I think because it is easier to remember 16" than 406.4mm.

Other applications use different ID, such as my Defender's 7.50x16, or American tyres are often referred to by overall height: 33" or such like.

It is actually section width (= tread + sidewall bulge)

A 235/85-16 in US sizing would be roughly 32x9.0x16

The US sizing is overall diameter (in), then section width (in) then rim diameter (in).

The old UK sizing (e.g. 7.50x16) was section width ("), then rim width ("). These tyres always had a 100% aspect ratio. So a 7.50 would be a 190/100-16
