    200TDi v 300 TDi

As an uninitiate to the esoteric issue of Landy TDi engines. Would one of you kindly souls please explain to me the difference. I went from a 3.9 Isuzu County to a brief engagement with a Defender in about '94. Then in '96 to a V8 Disco which lasted until '03 to my complete and undivided utter devotion and cohabitation with my current TD5 Fender.

Hence I basically bypassed the halycon years of TDi Landys and remain unsure of the basic differences and age brackets of the two.

    Cheers

The 200 Tdi has less BHP than the 300 Tdi , but not alot(although a 300 Tdi will beat a 200Tdi at the traffic light grand prix). The 300 Tdi is less farm type engine. Was made by land rover to replace the 200 Tdi so it could meet Us exhaust emisons. But also to make the diesel engine smother sounding. BTW the manaul 300 Tdi's have alot lighter clucth than the 200 Tdi. This was all part of the fact that the Disco was being more sold to wives for the school run. So land rover made it more car like.

The 200 Tdi has the v type fan belt where as the 300 Tdi has the serpentine belt.

The general opion is that the 200 Tdi is a more bullet proof engine and is favoured for mayor mud plugging. But that is not saying the 300 is crap it is still a bloody good engine.

I'd only add that the 200 has a mechanical fuel pump, and the turbo is not integral with the exhaust manifold. There are a few other minor external differences (radiator hosing etc). Several other internal ones.

    Cheers,

Yep - you are right - ALL OZ 200Tdis AND 300Tdis are fitted with a 100% mechanical (except for fuel shut-off solenoid) BOSCH VE injector pump (and a mechanical lift pump AFAIK). The OS (US/EUROPE) 300Tdis got a version of the VE with some add-on electrics, but can easily be converted to fully mechanical operation.

    I thought both 200 and 300 had 111Bhp???

From what I have found in a quick search, it seems that disco 200Tdis were 111Bhp, defender 107Bhp.

AFAIK, the 200 had a different water pump and front housing as well didnt it, I have only driven 1 and I thought it was great, but was a little louder than the 300 in my disco.

I think everything else has been covered.

Oh well it was from memory I knew the Disco and rangies were 111 bhp , but was close for the defender. But alot of people think the rangie , disco and defender were the same. But they are not.
