    Jack, welcome matey. It's probably more of a Land Rover thing than you.( And to all youngsters and their parents - bloody good on you for learning in a manual - and a Land Rover at that!!) Good luck with your driving lessons mate and for your test...in the fender of course.

    None of you guys have given the poor guy the right answer.
    With the TD5 you press your tongue slightly to the left for 1st and second gear going up the gears and straight ahead for the higher gears.
    When downchanging make sure you do the opposite (what else ?) .
    It takes a bit of practice but its one of those Landrover things.
    NB do not try this in a Series vehicle....

    i used to have to do slow changes and double shuffle to the gears in on lurch.........

    it wouldnt clunk......it would crunch......or at least it felt that way........
    unless i took great care....which defeated the purpose of a synchro box......or even double synchros like on the fenders........


    then one day.......i unplugged the switch on the clutch master cylinder.......no......not the one on the pedal........
    on the master cylinder........under the bonnet.......


    it will still crunch........if i change slowly.....ever since i unplugged that switch......i can change the gears as fast as i would in say a commodore......

    that was about 40 - 60,000kms ago.............no problems at all since then.......




    i did also have a clunk at two stages.........one was loose propshaft bolts.....
    and the other was worn splines in the rear axles.........



    try unplugging the switch and see what result you get.........i was impressed.......
