    non landrover question

I am possibly going to do a job which will take me out to isolated areas all over Aust. Therefore I am going to need a very capable 4x4 as well as one that I can live out of for extended periods.

I cant tow a van as I will be towing various big trailers. after looking at most of the big 4x4s I sort of think that the OKA in pop up camper configeration will fit the bill. Has anyone had anything to do will them? or have any of you got any thoughts on type of big 4x4 to live out of for months at a time.

Hi Blitz, one possibility, depending on the available budget, would be a tray top Defender with a slide on camper on the back. I am looking at the Trayon style which seems well built and would be very comfortable which is important if you are going to live in it for some time. Some advantages are 1: Not much extra windage over the standard cab 2:removable ,if needed, quite readily 3: entrance from the side so you don't have to scramble over tow bars etc. There is a web site which is reasonable in its detail.
The OKA is one large lump of a vehicle and is not an easy vehicle to drive in town.Friends of mine have one and like it but hate it around town. I understand you need a better than standard licence to drive an Oka. Cheers. 130man.

Yeah ya need a medium ridged license which is no extra theory just get in a medium ridged and go for a test drive. I have a 10 tonne pantec so thats not a problem. Yep I realise there would be no drive through in one

hadn't really thought about a slide on? a 130 tray back is also a pretty big area

Tray on my 130 is only 6'x6', no huge trouble driving around town.

Love the OKA's but have no experience with them. You could fit quite a nice camper on the 130.

Pity FC101's arent more readily available as an ambulance body would make a great camper and will tow no probs. What about a Unimog or even a 4wd bedford truck with camper body ?

I.ve looked into unimogs, except for the Australian army mogs they are all left hand drive so no good. Bedfords are a solid honest old rig but they are old. and to tell the truth I want something with a bit more creature comforts.

also it is Aussie made, and I will at times be towing loads that a normal 4wd are to small, except for a F250 but I'm not sure I want one of them

Theres a nice unimog in the May issue of 4x4 trader. 1986 model Right hand drive.
Also a nice ex-telsta Oka with bus conversion.

Would a 130 Cab-chassis with a canopy and roof tent be a possibility?

There are a number of ex-Telstra TD5 examples floating around for reasonable prices. I thought one of these were the best compromise for long distance/"long time away" travel, but only if there are just 2 people going.
