Yes, it is missing the rear diff. At least I haven't found it yet. There is a box of stuff on the front seat and I haven't looked in it yet. I did see the headlights, dash, and grille in the cab.

I'll keep an eye open on FleaBay or ask my local LR specialists. Hmm, they did have a Stage 1 they were stripping - I think they only wanted the 4BD1 and gearbox....

UncleHo, I can't see a 4th lever for the PTO. I can see the Black (gears), the yellow and the red.

I note it has a PBR trailer brake control on the dash - it looks like a vacuum control but as I haven't seen one before, I don't know. It allows manual application of the trailer brakes without operating the car brakes.

I had a look at the brakes but I can't see the width of the drum. I'd have to remove a wheel.

That firewall shape in front of the gearbox hump definitely identifies it as being a factory six. Congratulation Ron it looks like an unmolested example. Just tell the missus you heard he was going to scrap it and couldn't bear the thought of a piece of history being destroyed.

Landy Andy, I'm not sure the Limestone colour can be categorically connected to the 6 cyl. My other Limestone 109" (253 27731 D ) now dismantled, had a 4 cylinder petrol.
It also had a factory painted LR badge (silk screened)which James Taylor believes is an Oz Only characteristic. Uncle Kevin may recall this being done.

It also came with the "6 cylinder horizontal grille" as I have heard it referred to. Dunno about that one. It may have been some of the last mix 'n match stuff out of the bins. Got an image somewhere.

Yup! you are right about the colour, Limestone was a factory colour in all vehicles, dark vehicles had Limestone wheel rims, light vehicles had Silver, or Black as an option, and yes, the Horizontal grille bars were only fitted to the 2.6 litre 6 cylinder 2a vehicles as that was the easy way to identify the model,(and let stones in, flyscreen is needed) the Land/Rover badge stencilled on the R/hand front guard was used much later out here than in the UK, some fully imported vehicles still had the alloy plate fixed to the front guard to take the English No plate, this was then stencilled with the Land-Rover name.


Ron.:) That would well be a PBR Vacuum adjuster for a trailer, which adjusts the volume of vacuum to the trailer brakes, it allows you to increase the Vac when, if you have a trailer load of calves for the sale yard the trailer comes on first, when empty the setting is returned to near zero so that the trailer just brakes slightly before the vehicle, there should be a plug type thing at the rear (a small plug on a chain) that closes the connection,all tese service parts should be available from PBR (Aust) P/L (used to be at Campsie/Hurlstone Pk). There will probably be a hole where the PTO selector came through into the Cab, and it would have thad the Horizontal bar grille originally:)

Whatever you do, DO NOT put a rover/10-spline rear in it. Either fit a salisbury or 24-spline axles, etc... After I broke my 2nd axle I put a salisbury in and I have never regretted it.

If you can pick up the axles (drum-drum) from a stage 1 that would be a good option.

I'll ask - I know of a Stage 1 that might be being stripped. It depends on what they want for the rear end. Probably too much. :(

Hi Richard, I probably need the complete diff centre - not hub to hub.

Will 3.54 gears fit in a 4.7 carrier?

However, I'm not sure what I need until I empty the car out to check over the spares.

I couldn't do that today as my wife was home so it stayed hidden in the garage. No, she still hasn't seen it. Fortunately, she didn't come out back whilst I was sorting the stuff that I'm clearing at the Expo.

My preference is to go straight to 3.54 centres rather than 4.7 diffs with the Holden. It won't be an off-roader per se, more a useful second, er, third car.

If it is a real good 'un under the skin, I may do a good job on the rebuild (not to Dinty standard but still reasonable). There isn't a lot of bodywork to fix.
