You're right, it's tough. Playing God for an animal that's important to you is never easy. You knew the time had come - many don't and let their dogs linger in agony.

    When the heart
Is cut or cracked or broken
    Do not clutch it
    Let the wound lie open

    Let the wind
From the good old sea blow in
To bathe the wound with salt
    And let it sting.

Let a stray dog lick it
Let a bird lean in the hole and sing
A simple song like a tiny bell
    And let it ring

Sorry to hear it - one of my dogs is getting closer to it - about 14 y.o. (not sure, because she came from Orange pound) and getting slower - can't jump up on the furniture or into the Landrover any more and is nearly blind and nearly deaf.

Mate, so sorry to hear that. As you know I lost my best mate 3 odd mths ago and I still miss him terribly. My new mate who is from the same bloodline has many of his characteristics which makes it a little easier, though starting from scratch again can be a pain as we are about to head off to puppy training in the bloody freezing cold . Chin up mate, will have a cold one in memory of your lost mate,

    Kind Regards

    Stevo

So sorry to hear that ron, i think that would be harder than simply finding him dead in the morning or when you got home from work, not that that would be any easier. Was a nice dog to, always greeted me for a pat at the front gate when i dropped over for a visit. We lost one of our dogs at the begining of the year so i know what its like to loose a mate, its the worst part about owning pets. Matt

our four legged mate are the definition of unconditional love.

Sad to hear Ron. I'm sorry that nothing any of us say can take the pain away.

Think of all the good times mate.

Thank you everyone for your kind words.

Every time I read one of your posts, I get upset - again.

I've now had a few wines and I'm a bit maudlin....

It seems strange not having Johnson (named after the stuffed pink elephant in Johnson and Friends) aka Useless, Beastly, Dog, Mongrel, Big Ears, (and his real name of Count Julian something or other) underfoot when I'm getting my wine, cheese and bikkies, not checking before sliding the oputside door shut - just in case he's following (he was always a stickybeak who had to see what one was doing).

We stayed with him and held him when the vet did the deed - to think he was all excited to go to the vet. He liked going there.

    Sorry, I have to go....

    Ron
