Don't leave home with appliances on- a lesson

Well, yesterday a work mate had his kitchen gutted by fire after there 3year old dishwasher caught fire while they were at work. Luckily a neighbour saw smoke and called the firefighters. Damage was contained to the kitchen, except for smoke damage through the house. No one was hurt fortunately.
A lesson in not to leave your apliances on when you are not at home.

    Huh?
Who would ever crawl under the sink to turn off the dishwasher when they go to work?
Thats like saying "better not go outside or you might be hit by a meteor."
That would have to be very very rare. I have never heard of a dishwasher catching fire in my whole life.(until now that is 58 years on Monday)
I am sure someone will have the figures on houses catching fire from exploding dishwashers. Hey he wasn't cleaning the fuel tank in it was he?
    Regards Philip A

Yes that is what I meant.
Yes this is the first I have heard of a dishwasher catching fire.
Clothes dryers and washing machines are also caulprits oh causing house fires

Clothes dryers are the major culprit.
Its amazing to me how few people put a foam lint filter in, and you go in the laundry and its covered in lint!!!LOL
I once went into a friends garage where they had the dryer and the beams and crevices in the walls were thick with it.
You have to think people are a bit thick if they cannot see the danger.

I used to do a lot of insurance repairs and still do some assesing for a mate who owns a fire and flood restoration company.
From what I have seen, any electrical appliance can catch on fire. Have seen dishwashers, all sorts of stereos, computers and monitors, tv's etc all catch fire. Even one of my own tv.s was close to catching fire, lucky I was home that day.
Safest thing to do is turn the appliance off at the switch (or at the wall is better).
By the way, if any of you use those flexible braided water hoses in your houses I suggest you replace them with real copper pipe!

I'm sure our dishwasher has developed its own consciousness! It turns itself on and spins whenever it feels like it and I can't turn it off because it's hard wired in. I can't pull the fuse either because the whole kitchen is wired through the same breaker
