Winter colds and flu - "old wives tales"

I had the flu a few weeks ago and it was just starting to get better, until yesterday when it decided to come back with vengeance.

I've taken boxes and boxes of anti-biotics, countless packets of lemsip, drank tonnes of water, Chinese medicine etc etc and it still won't go

So start unleashing the 'old wives tale' remedies, anything anybody swears by or knows of, willing to try anything pleeeease

The best cognac you can afford, a big, big teaspoon of natural honey, natural lemon juice and hot water.

    That's what I rely on

Rum and oil of cloves. As often as required.

It may not cure you, but you won't care.

    Shorty.

Gave up taking anything for colds and flu, but the last few years I have been getting a flu jab, and that does seem to have cut down on how often I pick one up...

Fresh garlic is one of my staples!

And with all the antibiotics (I never take them) you've downed get some good bacteria back into you.

Only had a smidgen of Hennessy lying around... I assume you mean to mix it all into a mug (because that is what I have done... must say it tastes awesome, is good on the throat but yet to see the medicinal effects though). Needed a tsp of sugar to taste I found.

    Thanks ladas!

Make sure you are warm, and as others have said...the old lemon and honey works wonders for a sore throat, panadol for the pain. For a blocked nose some vicks vapour rub on your chest at night or in hot water in a bowl (you know the trick, hang your head over it and drape a towel over your head like a tent) as an inhalant as needed ( just be careful not to scald yourself!!)

Most colds last 7-10days...maybe you've been unlucky to catch another just as you are recovering, while the old defenses are low

Its when you have a fever that won't go down, or feel like you need to sleep all the time, or are coughing up thick green stuff, or have thick green stuff coming out when you blow your nose, that its probably bacterial and you should go see you doc.
Supposedly anti-viral drugs are being developed for colds, but none have been approved for use in Aus yet. Maybe in a few years (But I guess doctors will still prescribe anti-b.)

    Hi Joel,
I know exactly what u are going though.
I caught my flue/cold/whatever on the 3rd of July, was just starting to get better on about the 13th,was at home on the weekend, wanted a little nap on the Sunday & then woke up Monday with what i thought was a chainsaw stuck in my throat
    Started all over agin.
Lots of dark green chesty flem..A few packets of anti-biotics & hopefully be able to stay at work for a few days

Sore throat-honey & anything...it just soothes so well, Anti-col also helps
    Nose-Vicks & lots of it.

AND keep your fluid levels up..lots of water, i know its hard, but rest 7 drink lots of water.

    Hope u feel better soon.
