You're lucky. They are hundreds of dollars cheaper than the one for the GEMS engine.

Mine was replaced during a service and the cost was around $700 fitted from memory. Took a while to get over the shock, but it made a huge difference to both performance and to the auto box. Previously it would not change up to top until around 80k, but now changes very smoothly at around 60k.
Before you replace it try cleaning it first, remove it and spray the element with contact cleaner or carby cleaner, let it dry then put it back on and see if that fixes it, spray the plug with contact cleaner too.
They can get dirt and build up on the element from years of driving.

Another way to clean it (when everyone else said bin it)which i have done a number of times to myself is get a thin (say 20mm) soft bristled paint brush, remove the air flow meter from the intake tube and clean the elements inside with warm soapy water ..... yes water....use the brush to then rinse off any soap and let it dry in the sun for a few hours.
have done this to mine a few times and has not faultered yet.
What symptoms would you expect from a dirty/faulty air flow metre? I accidentally drowned my car a while back (air box not properly fitted) and it sucked water over the sensor and to this day, even though I cleaned it with contact cleaner, it has little muddy stains on it.
Aye, Mick
What Baz said, but I would add...................Before you replace it try cleaning it first, remove it and spray the element with contact cleaner or carby cleaner, let it dry then put it back on and see if that fixes it, spray the plug with contact cleaner too.
Pointy nose pliers. Give the male pins a very slight twist (they are vertical & flat) replace after cleaning as above. Support the cable where it exits the plug.
Btw, you may need to remove the Torx screws & take the end off to really get to the heater element & clean.
Twitchy.
You don't say what the problem is & that might help.
$250 from MR Automotive in Redcliffe 3 months ago.
That price could be bettered with a bit of shopping around.
As for symptoms.......Take your pick.
Can missfire, or cough when cold.
Drives like a slug. Hot or cold,or both.
Can throw numerous fault codes, usually not one that faults the MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor)
It could fault both oxygen sensors
It could cause the auto to act up, or throw faults
etc, etc, etc.
I had one that was not only giving an incorrect airflow, but the inlet air temp sensor was faulty too.
It faulted the oxy sensors continuously, and the car was a real dog to drive.
Try cleaning as suggested, but you may only be putting off the inevitable purchase of a new one.
How about on the TD5????
Mine is a THIRSTY SLUG at the moment, only really performs if you thrash it.The 235/85 tyres dont help, but have noticed a bit of black smoke lately which isnt normal on mine.

I had to replace mine as it died while at the snow a few years back. the car suffered all of the above symtoms. I think i paid about $640.00 fitted. But i did ask for the old part back which a cleaned with CO2 gas and and contact cleaner.
I fitted it back to the car and it worked fine. so now i have a spare just in case.
