    Warning Graphic Content

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/liv...n_page_id=1811

Warning the above link has graphic content that may offend some viewers

The link is new story on Malaysian Corporal Punishment of a drug dealer receiving 20 strokes of the cane which was filmed by the Malaysian authorities as part of their anti drug education campaign but has stirred up the human rights elements.

When people talk about corporal punishment and the need to discipline young offenders this is what the result would be for the offender.

    Is it a deterrent

My personal view is no, because offenders don't think they will get caught or in ignorance they think the penalty doesn't outweigh the benefits of the crime.

    Is it a punishment

    Yes it is

    Is it suitable punishment

I am in 2 minds about it

Soooo? i got caned at school for lack of discipline, bad results etc etc. I even got conscripted for 2 years compulsory defense force training. Did that teach me something? YES - respect for other people and their belongings, even made me study at school to avoid a beating .
Did that turn me into a deranged pedophile/murderer/whatever? NO, but i do drive a defender .
We in the "developed/civilized/politically correct" Western world have gone "soft" and lost a bit of touch with reality. For every action there HAS to be a reaction - and normally is eg you drive like an idiot under the influence of drugs/alcohol and kill/maim someone, do we say sorry you had to endure this, now be good and don't do it again, or do we beat the crap out of who-ever as a deterrent and also as a lesson/deterrent? There is too much leniency and as a result people don't realize there will be consequences to their actions. Break the rules (there to protect us all) and expect the punishment - simple.
That's why i'm all for hidden speed and red light cameras, taking hoon's cars away etc etc. rules are there for a reason, so a caning for drug dealing is acceptable and "light", to avoid it don't do it! Simple
The law is the law, you will get caught....

im in agreement, crimes need a deterent

i hate the prison type system in the UK, for alot of people its an easy way out, 3 meals a day and a roof over their head. There is no way admittedly that i would like to be in even the current system, but if you have no choice or cant deal with reality do a crime get busted spend time in jail.

Prison used to be a punishment, im sure it is still in some sense.. but not in the true deterrent sense.

Uk has also gone mad on human rights, scum seem to have rights, the decent people dont regardless whether they have had their basic rights taken away by the scum.

was it newton's third law that stated for every force there is an equal and opposite reaction? we still live by this in everyday science so why cant we apply this pretty universal law to everything?

if you take someones human rights away, you lose your human rights.. = equal and opposite reaction

    /rant over

thats why we left that bloody country.. but that isnt the first time i have posted about it

With Mediterranean Wogs it wasn’t uncommon to be beaten for being naughty well when I was kid any way, I still have scares from my old man

It only made me stronger and defiant so know it doesn’t work all the time

Dads tool was a bit of cable from telstra that was inch diameter rubber outer and copper 2mm strands on the inside

At time I didn’t sit for a week

    brutal I know

i got the cane so many times i couldnt start to tell you how many times.

for the first half dozen times it has a very big deterrent affect.

constantly jammed in your face you get over it and it isn't a deterrent, it is just another hurdle you get over, but the scales are altered, the deterrent needs to be bigger and better to be as effective.

there is a difference between enforcing a deterrent and abuse, and way too many times the former becomes the later.

that said there is definetly not enough deterrent in todays world, there should be more of it...but not to the levels of that some of the religious states out there take it too.

Us too, and much as I think the politicians now privately know they've cocked up, they'll never admit as much, so cannot openly be seen to start fixing it...I think it's going to get a lot worse before it can start to get better.

I'm just hoping to God it doesn't start happening here - as I'm now out of countries I'd actually want to live in. The UK and here were the only two, despite my employer's best efforts to get me to the US!

    we have whipping here too...

they use the same technique but I've heard it is only used up to 3 times on an individual, after which it is regarded as an inappropriate deterent...

sheesh you whip anyone with a tied together bunch of rattan canes and they don't get the message, there is something mentally wrong with the recipient!!

even an american kid who got caught spray painting cars got three strokes of the cane here about 10 years back, a lot of Americans were pi$$ed off and even bill clinton got involved but he still got the punishment that the law stipulates.
