Thread: sydney to kakadu trip!

depending on which way you come up stop of at Uluru on the way up and come back via the top east coast, drop in via cairnsish then troll it down the coast

however long you think you have planned to do it now double it if you want to do it even close to properly....


Im so glad my dad was a liney for PMG and did a heap of this stuff with me as a tacker and then the ADF had me doing it as well....

Id want at least 3 days for uluru, quick stop at the marbles on the way up to kakadu for at least 2 weeks, a week to cross over arnhem land on the way to the coast and then a week on the way down.

Minimum

i have done a search and on the site for kakadu and written down some suggestions that have been mentioned

like forget kakadu and go to litchfield........and i will investigate them further

I was told that too ...ie Litchfield is better ...we were there in June and spent 16 days travelling around both. ...
IMHO opinion Kakadu is amazing, awe inspiring, and spiritual ...you just need to take your time, spend a couple of nights in each place and let it get under your skin. Do your research ...try and get in to some of the more remote places where the tourist buses don't go. ...but you may need to walk a bit.
Yellow Water Cruise is good if very crowded but we found the Mary River NP and the more sedate and old fashioned cruise more our style.
Litchfield is quite speccy as far as waterfalls go etc, but chockers full of day trip tour buses from Darwin, unless you go down south on the 4WD tracks to Surprise Creek Falls ..we spent an afternoon swimming down there with no one else around.
Anywhere on the sealed road is going to be crowded unfortunately - but we were there in peak season it may be better later on. ( but hotter and more humid )
We were warned about mossies but didn't have any problems at all ...we took Vitamin B tablets and bought on of those Mortien candle lamp things ...don;t know if they made a diffrence but as said we had no problems.


and yeah ...as blknight said, if you can get yourself a permit to go across into Arnhem Land I will be very envious, I think it would be very interesting up there - that's definitely on the agenda next time we go ...

Honestly if time permitts do both, just allow plenty of time as mentioned above, calculate the time you think you would like/need then double it. We did it in 96 all thanks to the RAAF, posted to Tindal we spent 5 years up there and still did not see everything. One of the best spots we went to was Douglas Daly Hot Springs and make a side trip to Butterfly Gorge its not that well known. As for LITCHFIELD V KAKADU the fishing at Yellow Waters is FANTASTIC after the first trip up there I made a point of going back at least once a month. Litchfield was great for the kids one of the best spots was Blueys Rock hole camping area, we did the drive to the lost city in litchfield after reading all the info on the trip I was very excited about the drive in, but was a little diapointed as it was fairly easy,although mett up with this couple all the way from Melbourne in his big plash 100 series toymota he was a bit scared to follow us but I convinced him to come along with a bit of encouragement, after about an hour we arrived at the Lost City the kids, misses and I all got out to explore take some pics you know do the tourist thing and the couple from Melbourne did not get out of the car engine still going aircon on full. So much for the great Aussie outback experience!
