this question has kept me awake for hours

How is the light ray restricted to the length of a light sabre?

Originally a short range quantum refracting laser emitter was developed and after several billion particle lengths it self refracts back into the emitter via the high energy solar cell and so is self sufficient.

This was improved with the addition of the double staff sabre the technology here is in appearance similar but the quantum refracting emitter here is held in a constant state of flux between dynamically alternating time states. Thus the self-refracting quantum particles refract back through the originating emitter to it’s full length in a reversed state.
The solar cell in the double saber actually creates a surplus of energy as it creates energy from both the initial return of the refracted particles but also from the reversed particles.
The energy surplus is often used to power 3PO units.
