The CD, while 25 years old, did not really replace the cassette until the price of portable and automotive players became competitive, probably closer to fifteen years ago (it replaced LP records much more rapidly, almost overnight seen in retrospect)

I also have a box of cassettes - and play some fairly often, as the 110 has a cassette unit in it.

I've still got the stock cassette unit in my D2 so I've got a small collection floating about.

In some cases cassettes can be more robust than CD's. (sticky fingered kids chewing or dropping them on floor) Although wacking them in a stacker will keep them away safe and sound.

Of course solid state MP3/iPOD players will be the replacement as I see it.

They said on ABC radio yesterday that if you took the tracks (containing the bumps and holes) from a CD and streched them out in a straight line end-to-end, it would reach the moon.

I have old 20 yo magnetic disks that are still readable. I have even older computer mag tapes that are still readable.
I have even older cassettes that are still playable.
I have some music records that are over 70 years old and are still playable.

I have 5 yo high quality CDs with which I backed up my PC that are no longer readable.

I'd give magnetic media a bit longer.
