25 years? I thought it was 20 years in Australia, cause I bought a cd player when they were released in 1987! May be 25 years in the US.
25 years make it 1982 and as a teenager at that time would have known about new innovations in music.
Still have some of the original discs, 20 years old and going strong. Only turfed the original CD player last year. TEAC brand, still have my original TEAC stereo bought in 1985. Great stereos then, fantastic floor speakers still kicking it.

"The first compact disc for commercial release rolled off the assembly line on August 17, 1982, at a Philips factory in Langenhagen, near Hanover, Germany. The first title released was ABBA's The Visitors (1981).[4] CDs reached the market in late 1982 in Asia, and early the following year in the United States and other markets."

Still have the first CD I bought (John Lee Hooker - still my most played one too).
Lived in a shared house at one point and many CDs were destroyed by careless people borrowing them. Some of them are hard to find now and have not been replaced. Most of the good ones are now backed up.
I also have kept a pair of speakers from a Sony 4-in-1 unit I bought around the same time, they still sound fantastic (I always only pushed them to just below distortion).
The record player died after about 10yrs, that's about the last time I've played them. Finally tossed out a large box full of tapes this year
