I'll bet that the rear axle of the Series 1 is in fact identical to the contemporary Rover car except for the offset diff!

I suppose it's only a little thing, but the other day, driving the Landlords Hilux, I hit a spoon drain in town and the horn centre fell into my lap.
Driving down the main street beep beepety beeping, until I ripped the wires off. Plastic inadequate rubbish.

Now all I have to do is repair it for him. A lot cheaper than the repair his lady friend has. She backed into it the other day with her Toyo Cruiser, destroyed the Hilux's tail gate.

    Hilux? No damned luck.

WWII MB Willys had a full floating hypoid Dana 25 rear end.
Land Rover got rid of their only decent hypoid diff several years ago now and that was made under licence from the Yanks ......

Yes, Rover changed the fully floating back axle on the Jeep to the axle they already had in production. But obviously kept the design in mind, as they changed back again ten years later.

The first Landrovers were very much a makeshift vehicle - an "improved" copy of the jeep, using as many bits as possible that were already in production. Some of the differences from the Jeep were backward steps, such as the rear axle, but there were probably more improvements - such as a four speed gearbox, IOE valve arrangement instead of side valves, galvanised fittings and alloy body panels, 12v electrics, doors, tailgate, three across seating etc.

Over the first five years of production there were numerous changes, reflecting the experience of users, and to some extent the needs to produce the cars in far greater numbers than ever envisaged in 1947 (including extended wheelbase, long wheelbase version, bigger engine, part time four wheel drive etc) so that very few parts are common from 1948 to 1953. Over the next five years there were further (but far less than in the previous five years) revisions, culminating in the Series 2, which with progressive changes remained in production for 25 years (The differences between the Series 2 - 2a - 3 are less than changes during each Series, and the changes over the whole period less than from 1948-53).

Rover, and their successor, Landrover, have always maintained more or less continuous development of the original Landrover and its descendants, although more and more of the changes seem to have been made either for production reasons or to meet more and more restrictive regulations.

So far (touch wood), the only problem that I've had with my current Disco has been one of the horn buttons falling out of the steering wheel and landing on my lap - the day after I bought the car. The local Landrover dealer (before they shut up shop) replaced the entire steering wheel centre on warranty as you apparently can't just get a replacement horn button.

I've had one 95 series Prado and currently on my third 120 series (all work vehicles). I've never had any problem with any of them. While my personal preference in vehicles is the Disco (would love a Disco 3 - my last car was a Disco 1 V8 and current one is a Disco 2 TD5), I would never knock the Prado. For what they are and what they cost, they are a bloody good 4wd.
    Cheers .........

    Disco?

Hhmmm. bad stupid female driver in black disco shorty want to burn it.
Not only did she stop across my stern, as I was attempting to pull out of the servo. But, when she did move forward, I was half way out when her reversing lights came on again, and I just hit first and floored it as she reversed straight back to where she had been.

There has to be a brain quantity test for living, surely. I'm beginning to wonder if some people were fitted with a whole brain at birth.

    Hahh, I feel better now.

a cracked rear axle flange is minor compared to that

When the GQ Patrol first came out, they would crack/shear the panhard rod stud on the front axle. Happened to a mate and he ended up in a ditch. Also became a recall at the time
