Entire horse industry shut down Oz wide...

As of this morning, transporting of horses has been banned Australia wide due to an out break of equine influenza.
No horse racing, no transporting anywhere. This is the start of the breeding season and mares are travelling all over the place to be served. They are stuck where they are.
Any poor sod that took the kids and pony to pony club this morning, the horse is stuck there, it now becomes a quarantine zone.

I know this won't mean diddly to those that don't have anything to do with horses, but to those of us that live and work around the horse industries (I live in the biggest breeding area in the country, a lot of my customers are, directly involved or derive their incomes from the industry and my OH is a coach/trainer) this is bloody huge.

It's our version of foot and mouth, as it can also be transmitted, and I believe most cases so far have been by humans.
Worst case scenario (possibly alarmist) is all movement restricted in rural areas.

and just talking to friend/vet online and there is no vaccine available in Oz as we don't have EI........

You aren't even allowed to ride down the road now.

luckily all ours are at home, as the OH is away conducting a clinic this weekend, but technically all the horses there are stuck there.

From the NSW Dept Primary Industries site

All horse movement restricted in NSW

Equine influenza infection was confirmed in horses stabled in Sydney on Friday 24th August.
A complete standstill has been declared on all movements of horses in NSW in an effort to control the spread of equine influenza and to prevent it from becoming established in Australia.
New South Wales Department of Primary Industries is sending Inspectors under the Stock Diseases Act 1923 to inspect horses where there is concern that they may have been exposed to an infected horse.

A hotline number has been set up for all equine influenza enquiries - 1800 675 888
