Was only thinking about that the other day, whilst the HF aerial is padlocked on with a better than average padlock which is hard to get at I need to put locking nuts on the spare wheel and secure the RWC
You're probably wondering what the heck those have to do with each other.
I was wondering how many people leave their spare wheel carriers on their cars? My Kaymar carrier is worth about $500 or more new - add a brand new Cooper St and an alloy rim and it adds up!
A wheel carrier compete with wheel and tyre is dead easy and quick - it's a split pin and a single nut to remove before lifting the whole thing off..
My HF aerial is worth $1200 new. And how many leave their Engels/Waecos in the car? What's a fridge worth new?
If I drive to work, I leave them on/in but if I'm leaving the car at the railway station and catch the train, I remove them.
You might think that's weird seeing as I work at a railway station and my car is parked at one when I drive.
The difference is that at work I can park inside a locked compound whereas if I catch the train, it's in a carpark where it can be ripped off.
I recall some years back that one night at an LROC club meeting, 5 spare wheels/tyres were stolen from Discos.
Am I paranoid? Have others heard of fridges/carriers/aerials being ripped off?

at work they once had 6 4wd's worth of spotties, expensive looking areials, spare wheels, roof racks and jerry cans stolen from a gated car park in plain view of the back of our building (about 600 staff in that section who look out that side). Then the next week they stole petrol tanks out of the new bombadors - aparently they just drop them down and drag em out? all in the middle of a work day....
They were cutting through chain link fence. Video camera's everywhere now....

Never worried about it...
Thats what insurance is for..
I've had a winch disappear... And they stole the globesfrom my Lightforce once!
Knocking off of spare tyres of 4wds is common, lock nut them or take em off,as for the other stuff there are mongrels out there that will pinch anything not nailed which is really a shame, u work hard to buy your accessories and some oxygen stealing drugged out goose will knock em off to buy a hit of something, shooting is too good for them
I don't think you're paranoid...but I am lazy. I've been meaning to buy locking wheel nuts for the alloys (including the one on the back door) for months, but keep convincing myself to wait until I go to the UK and get them there....you know they'll get nicked just before I get back with the lock...
I also don't unbolt my UHF aerial, and my GSM one doesn't unbolt....again, I know my luck won't hold forever, but at least my Defender isn't daily transport, so the risk is minimised.

Whether you are being paranoid or not depends on where you are. In Dubbo for example they are currently running a campaign to try and get people to lock their cars - with plenty of unlocked cars there is not much incentive to remove tyres etc. Also depends on what car you are driving and what sort of wheels you have.
For example, demand for steel One-Ten wheels = 0, hence pretty safe. Same generally applies to any Landrover parts away from the cities, as the opportunity to sell the wheels etc is very limited.
On the other hand, there are places round here I would not park without removing the UHF antenna, let alone an HF antenna. And parking in some places with visible valuables such as fridges on show is asking for broken windows as well as missing goods.

Interesting to see Dubbo has not changed all these years, it was the same 25 years ago. A good mate lives just out of town and he can't stand going in, if he sees any of the brethren about he knows something is going to get knocked off.

Those of use with single pivot wheel carriers, e.g., Kaymar, know that to remove the spare wheel complete with wheel carrier means removing one nut and lifting the whole assembly away.
It's only a trailer axle pivot, so pull the split pin and unscrew the nut.
See pics on this thread http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread.php't=35602
Is it possible, I wonder, to buy a wheel-style lock nut for this? One might have to modifiy something as the thread will likely be wrong.
Removing my Engel will require smashing the tailgate glass.
The HF aerial can be retained with a Barri nut. http://www.barrinut.com.au/systems.html
BTW Barri nuts are available for some LR products (not the D2 or P38A) - see http://www.barrinut.com.au/prod_offrd.html
They make 14mm x 1.5 (D2/P38A) nuts for VW - see http://www.barrinut.com.au/prod_s-v.html - they might be adaptable for the spare.
They also make them for driving lights: http://www.barrinut.com.au/prod_special.html
We used them when I worked in international telecoms to keep Telstra staff out of our cable ducts.
