simple.... (Im assuming that your not aiming to build a drag landrover here but something that is good (or better than stock) off road and liveable onroad.

fit a tdi300 not a big job nor all that expensive (relatively speaking) keep the existing running gear and do your body lift. At the same time as a lot of things that you will have out/modify during an engine transplant you will need to have out/modify for a body lift. and its easier to do the engine bay side of that work for a body lift if the engines not in the way.

Yes as a stock tdi300 its not going to win you any drag races or sled pulls.

as part of your body lift work plan out a bigger radiator and intercooler. (you'll see why later) and if your an auto lover a cooler for that too.

now live with it for a bit get some $$$ back together and attack the driveline from the tcase out. Fit your 4.11's and your lockers and your maxi axles and ascroft CV's Think about your setup for the spring lift at this point in time, Do it if you have the $$$ but dont force it.

look around get your new bull bar winch, land anchor high lift anything that adds weight to the vehicle fitted and get that nice fat tall rubber and rims that you want... put the rubber in the shed for now.

Save more $$$ and go see the suspension shop fit your new suspension as you want it and the rubber and your almost done...

Still think you need more power? go see a Landie specialist (or a lot of blokes with TDI's from here) and get the pump tweaked. square the radiator and the intercooler shortly after if not at the same time as the tweaking. The TDI, with tweaks, can be made to go as well as a TD5 in stock trim maybe a touch better but I wouldnt push it that far if you want it to have a long and prosperous life.

being smart about it, grabbing bits when you can get a bargin (even ARB have sales months and end of stock clearances)

Depending on how far from stock you want to go, I reckon you could do it for $15K easily.

It sounds like you want a Defender .

300Tdi will have a Salisbury rear end. Put Maxi axles & Difflocks, put the motor on LPG and lift it 2".

The chances are you'd get one at a reasonable price with all but the LPG.

The Defender has the lower gearing and can take the taller tyres without mucking up steering & suspension geometry.

If it doesn't already have a lift, I'd be tempted to go air suspension for around the same price. That way you can sneak under low car parks and branches and reach over large boulders.

Each to their own, but I'd look to change the diff centres over to 4.1 or 4.3 Toy 8" and run Longfield front axle/CV's and HD rears to suit also (Rovertracks or JacMac if you can deal with Jeff) and Gas up a replacement TDi..... or stuff a V8 into it.

I agree though, as Maggot says, there is something special about the 100" wheelbase that just works.
    Cheers

As a line in a U2 song goes " dont let the bastards get you down ", many good options posted above by those that have done it to their vehicle so all is not lost.
If you can rebuild the 200tdi ,keep it.

For what you want to do, buy a well set up Y60 and get on with it, despite what anyone says about them they are an excellent vehicle, not as good as most people let on, but get a TD42 with aftermarket turbo and wheel it, I'm completely non-biased, I just like my rovers more, better ride, better looking, and better to drive, but can't go past jap reliability/strength

I'm sure many won't like me for this post, but I've either owned driven or maintained quite a few nissans and toyotas and you can't go past them for a good vehicle to get in and enjoy, but as magget mentions, they just ain't a rover

But out of the 2, I'd buy an 80series, Tojo has much better build quality than Nissan

They didn't have 4 cyls(ZD30) in the GQ (Y60) only the GU and yes they were a puss box, TD42 are a boulder, rock solid

Stick with the Landie Mate that’s what your heart is telling you..Rovers are a passion. Toyo and Nissans are throw away items..Where as a Land rover is an extension of ones Sole..

Hi, up until about 3/4 years ago the biggest thing mechanically I had done was maybe replace brake pads and spark plugs.
    Novice stuff.

    Until I got my RR.
In the last couple of years I have changed, springs, shocks, radiator, pads, rotors, clutch, replaced and minor overhall on a gearbox, installed electronic ignition, done a recon job on twin stommies.
Oh and stripped a RRC down to chassis and shell for parts.

It's amazing what you can do when you actually try. Now I never think I can't do that I think, give it a go if I stuff it up I'll call a mechanic.
I've saved thousands on labour and it's amazing how few tools you actually need.

It's also amazing what you can do when the option is DIY or get rid because you can't justify the labour cost.

If you love it keep it and give it a go !
