    Mrs Numpty

Couple of things about Lorikeets if I may.
This is from my own experience only.
These little birds love company, you have to put in the time with them.
For a start they have very messy bowel motions, they spray it about, not a problem tho. My bird hates having a mess down on the floor, she will call me " Hey Bod.
Chook poo Bod. " I have to stop what I am doing and go clean it up immediately, or my wife if I am not there.
If you got a young bird, Numpty would have to spend
time with it so that it is not just a one person bird.
They can get very possessive and agressive toward
someone else in the house if they have been brought up by one person only.
The important thing tho is that they dont like to be on their own for lengths of time. When we have to go shopping or to my wifes Doctor we can be away for 3 or 4 hours thats ok. I tell her what we doing and ask
her to look after the house and the little dog, She says, "See you later". I kid you not !
This is a little bit restricting because we cant just go out, we have to plan around the bird. one or the other of us used to be able to go away over night, but not the both of us without her.We have been doing it now for 16 years and I wouldn't change a thing.
We go out, we go on a trip, we take the bird. We have to plan her meals on the road. Over a period of time she has decided what she likes to eat by sampleing
    everything on my plate.
Morning she has a cup of tea, ( white with two ) followed by a bowl of egg and biscuit mixture and a piece of raison toast. Pieces of fruit at any time of day.
Morning tea at 11am ( she can tell the time ), white with two and a piece of dry biscuit.
Lunch, 1pm, is a piece of multigrain bread with butter and honey. Followed by a bath every second day before the cup of tea.
    Afternoon tea a must.3pm.
Evening meal 6pm, consists of peas and mashed potato
and a fresh bowl of egg and buscuit.
On friday nights ( she knows what day it is ) she likes
a small portion of meat pie to be added.
White with two at 8-30pm before she goes to bed
During the colder months May to October she has her
own electric blanket because she has no resistance to cold.
People think she is spoilt but that is not the case, she
just knows what she likes and has trained me well.
Like I said, they take over your life, but I would not change it for the world.
If you were to get one now while you are working, she
would have to be left on her own for long periods and
then you would have a very unhappy little bird.
If you got two that would solve that problem but then
you would not have the strong and unbreakable bond
that you get with one that has adopted you.
You would never regret it but can I suggest that you wait untill you and Numpty retire.
    Cheers.

Our Lorikeet is much the same in all aspect, eats similar things but likes the froth on my Cappuccino.

We take her on holidays in the caravan, in a smaller cage. The word "Yum" covers many things that she either likes or taste.
When we go out I tell her we won't be long and she says, "Okay, bye", and understands.

The word "Hop on" is both hop on and hop off. Looking at me is hop on, sitting on my shoulder and looking at her cage is the hop off version

Our bird also gets along well with my wife, but usually just talks about me, when she is with the wife.

I must say Lorikeets are really quite intelligent (about the standard of a 4 year old child), know what the want and do take up a lot of your time, but make fantastic pets. A laugh a minute with their antics.

Pat, my bird had no choice about being with us.
I think she was a reject and thrown out of the nest. She had no feathers just fluff. She is a bit undersized.
She had something wrong with her legs and couldn.t
stand up on her own, so she spent the first few months in the palm of our hand. Everyday she was given physio treatment. She would lay on her back and hold onto a finger so that her legs could be worked up and down one at a time. This worked because after
a few months she had enough strength in them so she could walk around. She hasn't looked back since, she is still only small but healthy and full of life.
Funny thing tho, to this day she still sleeps on her back
or on her side in a prepared, large tissue box on the floor of her cage. I guess this is her hollow tree limb.
It's a nice feeling when a little bird lands on your shoulder or wakes you up in the morning and says
    " Hullo Mate ".
Took most of the hard edge of me, I can tell you.
    Cheers.

No, I dont clip her wings.
In fact she wont go outdoors unless she is in her cage.
    Her choice.
When she was about six months old her cage was out the back so she opened it and flew off.
She was gone about six hours then the cat we had at the time came in and got Betty to follow her outside beside the house. There was the bird down in the grass.
She must have gotten a big fright because she wont go near a door and I would not let her out now or put her at risk in any way.
    Cripes, I got a fright too !
When we travel her cage sits on a padded platform in
the centre behind our two seats.
She gets excited when a semi trailer approaches from the opposite direction, she ducks her head and sings out " See you later, Mate ".
    Cheers.

While I'm at it I thought I might put up a pic of the
hollow tree limb or nesting box ! This is where she sleeps.
This one is about 6 weeks old and will remain untill she
lays the next egg and will then be replaced by a new one.
As you can see she has done quite a bit of work on it,
    getting it just right.
She usually lays 2 eggs about 5 days apart.
The day to day goings on with this bird is facinating.
    Cheers.

PS: back to the race, go ford !

Amazing bird you have there, friends of ours had a galah and when you entered the house it would screech " wipe your bloody feet " and "shut the bloody door " ! We have a female lovebird and she really responds to my voice so i talk to her when i can.
