    Question about rebuilding a Series

I will be coming over to Oz to live next year (Brisbane). I fancy a project of rebuilding a Series III. I have an Ashcroft conversion kit to fit the standard transfer box to an LT77. I also want to fit it with a V8. How difficult would it be to get this registered in Oz and what would I need to do ?

    TIA

It depends on which state you are moving to! Motor vehicle registration is a state matter in Australia. Although the standards and rules are supposed to be the same from state to state, the interpretation of them varies significantly.

The best bet would be to go to the relevant state website (e.g. www.transport.qld.gov.au) and find as much information as is there, and email a specific query if necessary.

What you are proposing would seem to be quite feasible with an engineer's approval (who would probably expect a brake upgrade to Stage 1 standard).

A couple of points - both Series landrovers and Rover V8s are a lot rarer in Australia than you are used to, although you should have no problem finding either, but there will be a lot less choice.

Note that there are in some states (I think including Qld) specific prohibitions on increases in tyre size and lifts above laid down numbers.

Although I don't live in Qld, I understand it is one of the easier states in most respects.

In QLD there is a fairly straightforward modification approvals system - basically a list of approved modifications and a number of private mechanics who can approve them, and issue you with a modification plate (blue plate or mod plate) to say that the modification has been inspected and approved.

A V8 conversion to a SIII (109") is a fairly straightforward approval. An 88" may need upgraded brakes to be approved. The best thing to do is to find an "approved officer" before you start, and talk to them about what you want to do.

Series landies may be less plentiful, but they are also dirt cheap. As are SIII Stage 1 V8s - which may be something to think about. I have seen good ones sell for $2000ish.

I'd second the Stage 1 comment - most that get sold on ebay go for around the $2000 mark (What is that, something like 800pounds?).

Australian Series vehicles amaze UK fans with their lack of rust. And Stage 1's are more common because there are much larger distances to travel here, so more incentive to have a motor than can hit keep the vehicle at 100km/hr.

Unless you have a particular hankering for the recessed grill, an EFI motor or a 5speed gearbox (or love doing the work), you couldn't possibly do the conversion for the price of buying a factory V8.

On a brighter note, welcome aboard, and congratulations for chosing the best country in the world to move to

I reckon that a Stage 1 would be your best bet for a Series V8, since you'd have to bring the mechanicals up to what they already have - why not let the factory do the work?
Unless you want a SWB / 88, in which case, I think it is unlikely that the bodywork can be left totally unaltered (but don't quote me).

That way you can spend more time focussing on setting it up for whatever you want to do with it, or just plain ol' having fun.

Ok as a pom that has ****ed about with landies in the uk and here.

    The question is WHY

The second option is to buy a RRc as they are alot cheaper than a s3 anyway, and already v8

And are you talking about doing the s3 here or in the uk and bring it over with you

    Thanks for the responses guys.
The thing is I really want to build a SWB Series. Just for the fun of it you understand. I will be bringing my 2 90's over with me anyway and we are looking to buy something else for the longer trips (possiby a 110). I was going to rebuild my Series III SWB here in England but unfortunately will not have the time or the space before I come to Oz. I already have the parabolic springs, dampers, V8 Engine, Gearbox (LT77) and Transfer box plus all the conversion gear. My plan is build build a SWB Series that looks just like standard but is powered by a V8 with a 5 speed gearbox. As for brakes I already have LWB drums (11") which I will bring over with me.

Ivan that would be mint condition in UK terms. They don't have rust here. Not as we know it thats for sure

Sounds like it will be a great machine! You shouldn't have too much trouble with the engineering. I would suggest finding the engineer before you start and talking through what you want to do first. It sounds like you will have all the necessary parts, just need a donor vehicle. For that a local vehicle is probably better than a UK one. The only other part I would suggest bringing would be door tops - they are a little hard to get here.
