Original tyre size on Series I SWB

    Two questions please:
    - What would be the original tyre size fitted to a 1955 Series I SWB? From searching I get 2 possibilities of 6.00x16 and 7.00x16, and the repair manual doesn't specify the size.
    - It is currently fitted with 205R16 tyres. Is this the same as 6.00R16?

I need to replace the tyres, so thought I'd get the size of whatever it originally came with.

    Thanks
    David

    The original tyres were 6.00 x 16, 7.00 x 16 were an option and I believe standard on 107s.

I believe they were 600/16 with option of 700/16.

205/16 are equivalent to 700/16 and are what I have fitted to Leon.

Someone will correct if wrong, but I thought 650/16 also appeared on occasions.

    G'day Numpty & Spudboy

Yes, the 6.50 x 16 was also an optional tyre size, but one that has not been available in Aust since about 1955, the common size and type fitted to them was 6.00 x 16 x 6ply conventionals, the Radial type tyres were not available in Aust until about 1963
The common types fitted were, BarTread, Olympic Trojan, Dunlop Road Track Major, the Bar Tread is still available, as they also are used on the WW11 Jeep, and Suzuki L J series and early Diahatsu F series. good tyre outlets will be able to source them for you, OR the 205 x 16 Radials will replace the conventionals, but set the toe -in to Zero for Radials

    cheers

Using the sizes you gave me above, I rang our local tyre depot and they told me 6.00x16 are now classified as vintage and are VERY expensive, so I have scrubbed them from my list.

They suggested 6.50 x 16 which they can get easily apparently. Around $800 a set!! More then 3 times the price of the car! Oh well, I can see restoration is going to be an expensive business.

    Thanks for all your advice.

    G'day Spudboy

I will check my sources for you as I am a member of the Military Jeep club of Qld and members get new tyres for their jeeps at quite reasonable prices, so I will make a few phone calls next week, as I know that I can get Road Track Majors for about $150 for 7.50 x 16 size give me a week os so and I wll get back to you

Max Goodrich at Marathon Spare the Jeep Specialist in Walcha NSW could give you a price,as he was up at the Canungra Swap in Oct and he had Bar Treads there.

    cheers

That would be good - thanks.

I am just trolling eBay at the moment to see what is around, and I put an advert in the Wanted section of Markets under tyres, so that may turn up something.

A mate of mine recently bought (6) 6.00 x 20 tyres, tubes, and rust bands for a vintage sports car he has now completed. $600 per wheel! Only available from specialist vintage tyre suppliers as far as he could determine after much research.

David 205s are closer to 6.50s and a little wider although they fit onto the 5" rim without problem.

Addit: David - I got MRF 6.00 16 bar treads from our local truck tyre service. They are a common size tyre used on lots of agricultural implements and also the earlier Suzuki 4X4's. Wayne (Ellard) has recently been investigating tyres for his 107 and found a supplier near Port Augusta for 7.00 16 Dunlop Road Track Major, (the replacement pattern for the T28). Drop him a PM and see if he has the details.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
