Have you had a chance to take some pics of your set up as yet. How much did you pay for your tank?

    Stainless steel.
Atlas Metals :: Stainless Steel Grade Datasheets

    A very versatile product.
As a Water Treatment Plant Operator PVC is better but for strength stainless is a very useful and varied product, some disinfectants namely sodium hypochlorite (the active ingredient in most disinfectants) is agressive to stainless but it is still a very popular construction material, the thermos would be a good example.

Generally if you want a cheap disinfectant unscented household bleach will do.
I wont give a ratio for effective disinfection but it is quite small.

Drive around for a couple of days - drain the water, give it a good rinse - hose in/tap on etc.

    The tank is then clean.

If you have a stainless steel thermos that has been used for black tea or even white coffee/tea and it is stained - try a couple of the Steradent tablets in it - you will soon see why the above procedure works.

Hope this assists. I have a plastic jerry can in one of those metal holders in the back of my Defender - with a length of hose and tap on the end. Works well - and yes, every so often I clean it with the Steradent. No problems after 4 years.

I know this is a bit of a grave dig.

But steradent Tablets. Are they still the go for Stainless water tanks.
If it is I will pop some in the tank and go for a drive. Then flush and if any taste do the cordial trick.

Only ever used plastic containers before and I have only ever rinsed them before use.
