I'm stumped at what "alley" is? Does it mean alluminium?? Fantastic that you made it yourself, I'm what you call an unhandy man, can't make a thing. So my defender fit outs cost an arm, a leg and plenty of the green stuff. I wish you lived closer to me. I'm in Sydney. Just a little wishfull thinking.

heres a question for all those with tanks permanently fitted to their rigs......

    first.....what leads to my question.......
ive got a few jerry cans i use for carrying water on trips.....
one is a 20 litre and two are 10 litre tanks......all three are plastic......

i noticed when i went to use one of the small tanks.....as i was filling it.....
i looked in through the filler hole and noticed some spots on the inside.....
    some sort of growth......green mould.....?

if this were a non transparent container....i would not have been able to see these.....and would have continued to use it for drinking water......

now.....back to my question.......how do you know what is going on inside your water tanks.......?

i also had an aluminium water bottle.....army type....and i stopped using that as well as the aluminium started to corrode inside the bottle.....
it was all white powder on the inside.....i only saw this when for some reason i took a look inside it with the sun at the right
angle so i could see in it.......

are these tank...drums....containers safe for drinking.....?
last thing you need on a weekend away is runnybum.......

    any tips....hints....ideas....solutions......?

I have a 50lt black poly tank on rear passenger rear floor.Generally I empty on return from trip and rinse out before filling again. If I was to leave water in there I would look to add purification tablets every so often as precaution.

    cheers

I do the same , Empty my tank from every trip and don't fill it up until a couple of hours before the next trip, the water in tank gets boiled for tea/coffee only and used for cooking , for drinking I got cold beers in the fridge....

My Question is , Does anything grow inside a kITCHEN GRADE Stainless Steel "Water tank" when there is no water in it?

so how can you tell if its dry inside.....?

im pretty sure there will still be some water or at least moisture left in the tank.....

water purification tablets may be the answer.......

who has one of those defender tanks i could borrow........?
i might be able to get them made up in stainless at a good price......

Yes you're right...I wouldn't be able to tell if there is any water or moisture left inside the tank, and water purification tablet may be the answer...

but.. as i said ..we always boil the water straight out of the tank for tea/coffee and it gets used for cooking etc... for drinking I always either have a bottle of mount franklins water in my fridge /soft drinks/ or beers , non of the blokes I go out with ever use water purification tablets inside the s/s tanks.. not that i know off anyway...I have never have had any issues with the water from my stainless steel tank ...never been sick or had the runs .. out in the bush ..

I have a 40L plastic water tank in the rear footwell of my 110. I've got the fridge in the middle and then the tank underneath(ish). I then have a pump under one of the seats which sends the water through a filtration system and then out of a tap in the rear (where I do the cooking).

Have a look here to see some pics.

As for mould, the food grade plastic is pretty good at avoiding this. It blocks out the light so that the algae can't grow. Flushing the system every now & then is a good idea and occasionally I'll run a sterilizing solution through. You should be able to pick up some suitable sterilizing stuff from your local home-brew shop or caravan/camper van shop.

Ally... Ideally, you should only use food grade aluminium otherwise you run the risk of it contaminating your water. A lot of people argue that they don't notice any difference... But then you won't, especially when alzheimers has set in.

I too was concerned about bacteria especially after this email was sent to me, so that is why I am interested in the stainless steel tanks. How much do you think you could get the tanks made for? I might be interested in the set up that Weeds has.

Bottled water in your car.....very dangerous to woman!!!!

This is how Sheryl Crow got breast cancer. She was on the Ellen show and
said this same exact thing. This has been identified as the most common
cause of the high levels in breast cancer, especially in Australia.

A friend whose mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. The Doctor
told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car.

The doctor said that the heat and the plastic of the bottle have certain
chemicals that can lead to breast cancer.

So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a
car, and, pass this on to all the women in your life.

This information is the kind we need to know and be aware and just might
save us!!!! The heat causes toxins from the plastic to leak into the water
and they have found these toxins in breast tissue. Use a stainless steel
Canteen or a glass bottle when you can!!!

Let every one that has a wife/girfriend and daughter know please.

    Myth.

As for the clear container/solid container argument - algae need light to grow. No light, no algae. Don't need to see in, coz if you CAN see, they can grow.

If you're THAT worried about growth, drop a water purifying tablet in your container!
