    D1 rear storage

Im going to build a rear storage system for my D1 and Im after ideas on how to go about it.

I want to retain the floor on 1 side for the Weaco CF50 but I want to organise things a bit better than the big box I have now with everything in it and then the tool box as well.

I would love some photo's if possible but just ideas would be great.

    G'day Mcrover...

you had so many options available ...

but firstly Here are a few questions?

Are you thinking about retaining the back seats on your disco?

Will your storage unit be a black-widow,outback style with rollers , or would you like it built out of a timber/Steel Frame with plastic containers as storage draws ? or Would you like the draws to be made from Plywood or just MDF ?

Have you set aside a budget for your project ? $$$ that's always the important bit..

one thing to consider , just an option ...if you take your 2nd row of seats out to fit your storage unit in for long touring this will give you heaps more room for storage and less things to go on your roof...

or....if you like a 2nd alternative is to take out only LHS 2nd row seat which will be a dedicated spot for your waeco in case the Waeco doesnot fit N/S and then you can have your fridge fit on the LHS on the Floor of Cargo area facing N/S...

ok let's says you decide to keep the 2nd row of seats in the disco...

Will your CF50 Waeco fit N/S in the rear cargo compartment with 2 back seats in-place ? I'm not sure of the exact dimensions of this particular model Waeco ( Height, Width ,length ) with respect to the back of the disco...

I suspect it may have to fit E/W on the Floor..if so that almost ties up Floor level of the D1 on first level...which would mean you have a narrow width for a 2 draws top/bottom on the floor level for tools/recovery gear/cooking utensils etc..

now will you the fridge Slide ? if yes then the rest of the storage system can easily be incorporated around your fridge...you have the freedom as to wheather you want 1 draw , 2 draws /1 small Draw on RHS of your Waeco and then 1 massive draw right across the whole top on 2nd level of your build..
or even a Flat area accross the Top with Tie-Down points Another thing to consider..

I know on my previous posts I mentioned that I don't have a cargo barrier on mine because everythnig is Turned buckled down to the Draw unit which is 1 Solid object.. however I'm still thinking about welding together a cargo barrier just for safety of my passengers .. for just the top half of my storage unit ...so I suggest definitely a Cargo barrier ??? if you already have a cargo barrier , well that's a bonus...we can work around it...

However...They 're overall difficult at all to weld / fabricate ... I can certainly help you with that side of it if you're in sydney...

with my storage unit I have welded togerther a Steel Frame and it's wrapped around with MDF . and Draws are made from MDF..now Would this be what you have in mind ?

or/ would you like to fabricate a Steel Structured Frame and either make draws out of Ply wood or buy readily available plastic boxes , or will you be content with a Timber/Wooden Frame/structure for weight specification?

If you tell me exactly what you want I can Draw it on paper and send it via Email in PDF to see if it's exactly what you're after...

I'll post up a few photos of mine tomorrow..

    have a good one..

Mcrover my aim when I built mine was to try and keep the wieght down so I used aluminium where possible. The shelf is actually aluminium mesh which makes it easy to tie down things. The whole thing would only weigh 15kg. A large bin goes in the right hand slot, and the fridge slides in the centre on some runners. The foam stops the fridge rocking around and also insulates it.
I have a false floor at the bottom where the slot is and the table slides in under there. for making lunch at the back of the car it slides part way out, or pull it all the way out and the legs drop down and it canbe free standing.
This isnt a very professional build and all done in one day. I was intending to rip it all out do something better, however this design has turned out to be very practical for us, so it's stayed the way it is.

This is what I have done it's all made from ali sheet and tube. Its a push together system and at a span of 600mm the frame can handle 100kg.

All up it cost me about $300 (runners for draw and fridge slide up the cost)

Here are some pics of my storage unit , it ended up being rather expensive and because I didn't set aside a budget for it.. including upholstry cost worked out around $1000.00 ...ah by the way the total cost includes the tools which I own outright now and use regularly in the garage.

    what I gained ?

1 x cicular metal cutting drop saw

    1x Cigweld Arc Welder

lots of experience from making mistakes..

if you asked me , would I do it again , Absolutely I would , loved every step of this project...the misus had the S.......Ts with me because I spent a lot of time in the garage...

Yeah, HOPEFULLY, nearly 4 weeks off from Thursday but I wont be able to do too much for the first couple but then again I can use that time to gather everything together and do it.
