    It's not easy!

    4 departments are involved:

    1. DOTARS. They say you must have owned the vehicle overseas for at least 12 months before you can bring it over here under the "personal import scheme"

    2. Customs. Vehicles over 30 yrs old don't attract import duty but still get a 10% GST charge

    3. AQIS: require the vehicle to be steam cleaned and inspected before they will release it

    4. Each state department of roads/transport have different rulings on vehicle safety

Of course, then there is the freight charge for sailing the thing all the way over here.

We're hoping to bring a 110 (less than 16 years old) over from Sth Africa once we've overlanded it. But we need to make sure we've been away 12 months with the car and then the fees associated do make it tricky.

    Here's the breakdown:

    Customs value $10,000
Customs duty @ 10% $1000.00 Payable to Customs
Plus international transport and insurance $2500 payable to the freight company
VoTI $1250 (just for calculation, you don't pay VoTI)
    GST (10%) $125.00 Payable
AQIS Cleaning: $300 payable to AQIS

TOTAL = $3925 on top of the purchase price, excl. any brokerage fees but including shipping.

Now if you bought it in the US instead of the U.K or Sth Africa, and import it from the US to Oz, then under the US-Australia Free Trade Agreement, they can't charge the GST and the duty is minimal.

    G'day Juddy

Yes, it can be done, I have a friend that brought in an EX-RAF Series 3 Lightweight a couple of years age with some Sankey Trailers, into Brisbane,it will need to be washed throughly in UK, but will be washed again in Aust (it is an AQIS thing) money maker then it has to go through the usual Rego requirements, it would be handy to have a copy of the workshop & owners hand book for the vehicle just in case you strike a ^&#@** rego tester, if it is over 30years old it can go on historic rego a little cheaper but has limits attached, the Lightweight is on full Qld rego, just a Series 3 SWB really and there are 101's already regoed in most states, so they wouldn't be to much trouble. Series 1's and 2's shouldn't be a problem either.

    cheers

Make sure you keep ALL the paper work re importation, I bought a USA import bike without the papers; no papers- no compiance plate.... no comp plate- no rego!!! Look in Just Cars mag, heaps of ads by companies that will look after every thing for you at v reasonable cost.

You forgot the handling charges when it arrives at the port (or are you including that in the brokerage charges?)... They'll charge you a few hundred $ just to move it from the wharf to another yard!!

Oh... and they love paperwork. When you go to do the forms, go armed with all the paperwork, including original bill of sale for proof of value.

If you are supposed to have owned the car for 12 months, how on earth do the people go on who buy the jap imports? and how on earth do they meet the ADR?

And also would the car not have to meet ADR regs??????? say for example i wanted to bring in a 127 Raiper???????

I brought my td5 90 over, with some helpful advice from Ali (Reads) about 6-8 weeks ago.

The total bill for everything was just over $12k! including

    shipping,
    duty,
    gst,
cleaning (by the way its $275 an hour - be wary!)
    storage,
    container unpackin
    registration,
    engineering approval,
    etc etc

You must get approval from DOTARS. If you dont you wont get anywhere!

I can try and help if you need it. PM me. It is a long process though so be warned, but its not impossible, and my 90 is now all legal and its no way near standard so dont let scare storied put you off.

They bring them in as a business, not a personal import.

    ADR's are easy.

    all you need is

Seatbelts with correct numbering 'ADR4' ideally. my Defender had this
    Seats with headrests
Glass with as1 or as2 on it - std on my 90
Lights that dip left and of correct colour
child restraint anchors if you have more than 2 seats - I didnt

    Pete
