Has not happened to me in that circumstance, but has happened at other times and then I have shot them down in flames with facts. When they start ranting ask them to provide doccumented proof and this again shuts them up. I also add that it is my decision to own whatever car I want and my 4x4 is not a show pony.
Basically if some one bailed me in woolies I would tell them to %$%^ off and if they kept on hip and shoulder them as I was in fear of my and my families life with their intimidating attitude, honest officer.

My missus has been driving the 120 around for the past couple of months
Has been asked "why don't you drive a proper girls car?", "how the **** do you drive that thing" and "where's the jag?"
And I've been told "**** your missus must be very tolerable, driving all those pommy ****boxes"
You sure thats it?i have never been abused, does turn a few blokes heads though have to do a second take when there is a women driving a 90 thats bashed to s**t covered in stickers................
normally wearing my oakleys as well that have reflective orange lenses which usually makes them stare even more! until they suddenly feel uncomfortable because they suddenly realise that they have been staring at me for a long time...............and then dont know where to look can be akward at the lights

I drive our 130 quite a bit and most blokes take a second look and then smile. Everyone is really nice and I've never been abused.
I brought it to my new job the other day (it rather stood out in the car park) and the guys were all rather impressed by the 'beast' and my ability to reverse park it

My girl drives the rangie a fair bit,(I KNOW it's not a defender...) it has a near on 3" body lift, 2"1/2 suspension lift, 33 inch mudders and bull bar, snorkel etc, Isuzu stickers etc and a huge front mount intercooler, it sticks out in the school carparks, but AFAIK there hasn't been any unpleasantness yet...At least not from her anyway

I cop abuse all the time. I do have p-plates though, so I tend to put it down to that, as I dont cop more in the county than I do in any of the other two vehicles we own.
I have to admit, it's hilarious to watch a jacked up something go past, get the 4x4-lovers wave only to have them retract the arm quickly back in the window when they realise I'm female. Great giggle factor as well, when the little sporty p-platers pull up beside the county, look up and find a female face smiling down at them. It's a bit like:
