Yep no worries, the D2 is a newer and more highly appointed and the TD5 out of the box is more powerful but there is no doubt that they are also about 4 times more expensive to maintain and there are way too many things to go wrong electronically.
They may be good for 10 years but then electronics will fail and when they do then your car will be basically useless as it relies on the electronics for it fuel injection, to make the auto change properly, control the traction control, to control ACE and just about all the other systems like the climate control etc etc etc.
D1 has none of that in the TDI's, all the bits on a TDI is easilly replaced and things like the trans, may be exy to repair ($3500 for a good quality tested rebuild) but thats much cheaper than a D2 trans which has all the electronic stuff hanging off it as well which costs a bundle.
TD5 in the Defenders is a different computer set up than the D2, Im pretty sure that is is just an engine computer and everything else is separate.

less moving parts, less to go wrong.
ECU's only fail when an outside agent is introduced,,
dust. heat, moisture.
This is called TRIP PREPARATION.
if one ecu fails,, the rest dont go out in sympathy,,
the autos are the same--D1-D2 just the D2's are run by an ECU,, if you blow a trans in a D2,, the same trans in the D1 would have given up a long time ago--
very very few times will an electronic fault actually STOP you.

I'm on my 2nd TD5 and have no qualms about the electronics, although items like the boost modulator and ABS modulator can fail due to either an electrical or mechanical fault.
If I was to buy another TD5 (but I'd hope for a TDV6 D3) it would get the oil pump bolt replaced immediately and upgrade the front prop shaft to greasable unis. I would regularly check for oil in the injector harness plug at the front of the head (as I do now) rather than wait until the oil starts to cause problems. Oh yes, I'd get the ecu upgraded too!

B. yes the trans is the same 4HP22 but the D2 is electronically controlled and without the electronics it wont change very well if it did at all.
C. It's only my opinion, I dont want anything to do with TD5's and D2's, I do too many river crossings and play in mud way too much to bother with the repair bills.

I think that historically automotive electronics have been pretty reliable. Yeah, they can have problems, but generally are sweet. I recall the backlash when I think it was the Camera came out with EFI and everybody cried that it was going to be a disaster and that electronics will kill it before it starts. I'm not sure if it;s the case, but in the same vein, how often does a car stereo break down? It could, but it doesn't and likewise with ECU's etc.
With water and mud etc. The disco2 has it's ECU in a different spot to the renowned defender and it doesn't really seem to be much of a problem. My jigger has been in water and mud all of its life and up to bonnet/windscreen depth, and in 6 years the ECU hasn't ever given me the remotest of problems, as with anything else in it that is electronic.
As a guide, this is just before I drove into a hole and had water up the windscreen and the side mirrors stopped water from coming in the windows. Don't be under the impression that electronics die in these situations - it's just a furphy.
