The larger group, 7 or 8 vehicles, about 16 blokes, had started on the tree already. Problem was that it was about 8;30 in the morning and these blokes were already on the Bundy and cokes.
Gum tree across the track was laying on close to a 45 deg slope and probably a meter in diameter, very unstable.
The bundy and coke specialists had a wrangler jeep hooked up to the tree via a snatch block anchored about 2 meters up another gum (this gum was about 200mm diameter and ground was very wet).
The cable was under load, with 14 blokes gathered around nice and close, drinking and each shouting opinions on what to do with another 2 blokes on chainsaws.

Our group kept a respectfull distance and watched, waiting for something to go horribly wrong, which thankfully it did'nt as i recon we could have been faced with either, the downed tree sliding further down the slope (with wrangler attached), the snatch block tree being pulled over during the winching operation or the group running out of Bundy's and coke
Don't know which would have been worse........
Sounds like a bunch of irresponsible idiots!
That type of behavious gives ALL 4WD drivers, very bad publicity.

these two key points are important very important IMO

    1. what kind of group did he go out with not one of them said stop your not in the rut and you see on the left hand side what he backs into I've made a rule that if I sense that the people around me are less or as experience I do chicken tracks if I'm confidant in the trip leader then I will give almost every thing a go

    2. it unsafe drinking on the black top what makes a person think they can drink of road where its even more dangerous not sure if he was though its a point

    poor bloke all the same

The more you look at it,it seems it was a case of inexperience. With even a small amount of skill he should have sensed he was out of the ruts and should have corrected at the start he only appears to have reacted once he realised he was going to hit the bank. The weight was of the front wheels by then and he appears to have locked up the brakes rendering any form of steering ineffective. At this point he might of saved it if he took his foot of the brakes and accelerated slightly in an effort to regain some grip and steering. Mind you as anyone knows it can all happen too fast sometimes and you panic first and only realise your mistake afterwards. Has happend to me many times but luck has been with me most of the time and no serious damage has occurred. Drinking could have been a factor but i reckon that seems too be more in the pootrol and cruiser ethos.
seriously though i hope no one here would drink and drive especially not on a bush track where you need to have a clear head.

Years ago, I was in a car of 4 when we came upon a line of Toymotos who had obviously been away for the w/e (& some were still "away").

It turned out that a family of 4 in a commode door had driven straight off the road at a bend (I think they were Sth Americans, not that it matters).

There were 7 Toymotos, most with at least 1 passenger. I asked who was the first aider looking after the family? They looked at me blankly. NOT 1 of the group had a 1st Aid certificate!!! Their focus was getting the 'door back on the road & left the family to their own devices.

All 4 of us had current 1st aid quals from Basic to Advanced to Remote Area and suitable 1st Aid kits.

Luckily, the family was suffering nothing more than shock, but that can still be serious.

We looked after the family while the machos recovered the 'door.

    Talk about ignorance!

From the look of it, that little gum tree they hit on the way down saved their bacon. One roll could easily have turned out to be full blender incident.

Like others have said, I have backed down much worse than that but always in low range and with someone looking where the wheels are going.

Glad to hear they are OK and as a Waeco owner I am happy to hear it also remained a goer.
