    Identifying Kohler Gen Set

We had a power blackout today, so I dragged an old gen-set out of the shed that has been in there for years and not used. After adding some fuel, checking oil etc, it surprised me by starting with the first pull on the rope.

What I would like to know if anyone out there is familiar with these, is what size gen set this is (ie. what kVa).

The engine is a Kohler Command 6 4 stroke petrol - I have downloaded the users manual for this from the Kohler web-site. It is 6 hp. I can find no info on the generator. The ID plate shows Model No. NAC 51 A and what I assume is a serial number 2 OL 014 - no other info including manufacturer name etc is shown.

The only similar info that I have been able to find is a Kohler Command 6 2500W Generator for sale on "trademe". This one states model DG2500, is 220 volt, 2500W. No pictures are shown, but other dimensions stated in the add (weight, measurements etc) sound similar.

    A couple of photos below.

Would appreciate if anyone has any ideas / info on these. It's not a bad gen-set. A bit heavy for camping (about 45kg) and not the quietest thing around, but I used it many years ago during a prolonged period of power rationing when the main power lines to Kalgoorlie were damaged in a bushfire - we kept fridges & freezers plus a few lights running in two houses with it.

    Thanks .......... BM
    Cheers .........

    3-4kva for a 6hp.
10years servicing generators 1.5kva to 2000kva points me in that direction.
kohler is a top little engine, you wont have any probs with it.

Thanks for that. I spoke with someone locally today and he seemed to think around 2.5 kVa as well. I'll have a bit more of a play with it and see how much load it will handle.

6hp is over kill for 2.5kva, at least the genny wont kill the motor due to load.

    load should be 2500 watt's, something like 2x1500w flood lights should be max;
9'' grinder may be too much, but i notice yourse dosnt have and RCD attached to it? all ours have RDC fitted (safety/law reasons) they help customes from destroying the gen sets.

had a vee twin 10hp kohler (8kva) at work not long ago running fine apart from a slight back fire. i didnt think much of it at the time but on a second look i found that one cylinder had a seized piston, broken rod etc, but still ran like a trooper. i could load it up to the hilt with the tester, wouldnt phase it the back fire was the air fuel mix in the seized cyl going into the intake due to the still opperational valve trail on that side.

    cheers phil

Know what you mean about RCD's Phil. In the mining game, they insist on having them on pretty much everything these days. I actually bought this gen-set from a store in Kalgoorlie that supplies "safety" and tooling equipment to the mining industry about 10 years ago. Back then I suppose, there was not so much focus on safety devices. The gen-set had been on the shop floor for a number of months and they couldn't sell it because Kohler engines are unheard of in the mining industry. I ended up getting it for cost price.

About three years ago, they also changed the rules to require that all portable welders had to have VRD's fitted. The company I was working for at the time (mining contractor) had just bought four new CIG "caddy" welders. A mines inspector told us that we wouldn't be allowed to use them once the new law came into force. You can fit after-market VRD's, but they're apparently not known for their reliability, and are easily damaged. I rang the boss in Perth and they sent us another four welders with VRD's installed. Asked him what he wanted done with the original four, of which two had never even been taken out of their box. He told me to give them away to any employees who wanted them, as they were of no use to the company. So I scored one of the new ones, as did our apprentice fitter, boilermaker and one of the shift bosses. Right place at the right time.
    Cheers .........
