When were you thinking of going ? Only because the whole lake system have problems with green algae at the moment. All the lakes are off limits for swimming but boating is still OK. It's caused by nutrient run off from farms etc after the recent rains.
I'd say Lakes Entrance itself is more your family oriented place, with more for the kids to do. Can get busy this time of year. There's fishing charters that go out past the entrance. Plenty of accommodation options there - take a look on the web.
Metung is a lovely spot , smaller and quieter than Lakes and more for your relaxing, pottering around holiday. No ocean beaches though. We have hired a 30ft boat ( motor cruiser ) from there in the past and cruised around the lakes for a week. Fantastic - highly reccommend that ! You can hire yachts too, if sailings your thing. There's also day boats you can hire for a bit of fishing.
Paynseville and Raymond Island are quite nice spots too -actually my personal preference. You can hire boats from there too and go over the lake to the bird sanctuary and 90 mile beach.
Plenty of good drives in the hinterland - go up to Buchan and see the caves or even on up to McKillop's Bridge if you want too - the Forester will handle that no problems.
