Shorty943,
Thanks for that, very humbling, I will pull my head in AGAIN.
I met a real live hero once. More than once actually.
It has been my privilege, on more than one occasion, to share beers with Kieth Pain VC. There is a hero for you. Glad I was Navy, and not Army, in his unit.
My first Admiral, Rear Admiral Dover RAN., was a 14 year old officer cadet in the RN, serving on the Prince of Wales, during the battle that sank the Bismark.
Hero's. We need them, to show how life is to be lived.
And Evel Knievel too. He went where nobody else had been before. That's all it takes. Take a deep breath and go for it.
John F Kennedy Lt (jg) USN, Captain of USN PT 109, another hero of mine.
He served over here during WW2, in the Coral Sea.
A friend of mine "Patch" Campbell, 3 tours of Vietnam, never lost a man in his platoon.
"Stretch" Burt, SA Coroners officer, Vietnam Vet, US Congressional medal of honour winner. Another hero.
There are lots of them, just look around.
Go down the beach, there they are in red and yellow caps.
Go out bush, and we all wear yellow firefighters overalls.
In every state in this country we breed hero's.
The 16 year old boy, who jumps through a burning house window, to rescue a little girl. That happened here only last week.
Hero's all.
Shorty943,

Fairly evident that he was an arrogant young man too, your typical self promoter type.
I'd love to know the truth behind the snake river canyon jump, did the parachute accidentally deploy or was it deliberate. He didn't seem too keen to answer questions did he?
You got it absolutely right Shorty.
While EK thrilled us in many ways, I would not say he was a hero in a direct sense of the word. An idol and famous yes and as a kid I thought he was great. A hero is someone who does selfless acts without thought of fame and reward. Our society regards too many sporting and famous people as heros. They generally are not, they are being paid or recieve some sort of benefit from their acts. They can still be idols and role models. We here it too often in the cricket and footy that these people are heros. They are paid proffessionals and the better they do the better they get paid.
I still respect a lot of them and my Idol was Peter Brock and his Polariser
We should focus on the people who commit real acts of heroism, diggers,l police, ambos, fireys (even though they are paid most of them will go beyond the call and do their job for passion), all the volunteers that hep the aforementioned, surf life savers, SES and many many more.
While I respect awards for spotsmen they are not Australian Of The Year Material for sporting achievements only.

Fair call, but I would also say that was a pre requisite for this sort of thing. Limp wristed, shy folk don't tend to shineFairly evident that he was an arrogant young man too, your typical self promoter type.,

My veiw is that all people are hero's until prooven otherwise, just ask your kids
I watched it and wasnt surprised with what he was like, most blokes in his situation would be the same, highly medicated and in pain constantly and not being able to breathe would make most people pretty testy but in saying that, he was like that as a young fella as well so maybe he was right that the pain and all that didnt get to him.
I dont think that dare devils and sports people are hero's for what they do for society as it is only entertainment in the end but EK was deffinatly brave and faced fear head on and for that should deffinatly be admired.
He was a childhood hero at the time, we watched in amazement at his feats, sad to see his demise, but that is life, I guess.
