As far as I know 4.2 litre Nissans are no longer available so you have no other choice than to buy a 3 litre. Hopefully yours will be reliable but they have a really bad reputation for dying a very expensive death and are called Nissan handgrenades. I would swap a few oil leaks and the occasional electrical problem any day for the knowledge that my motor will most likely not blow up for no reason other than apparently poor design. 120,000 - 140,000 seems to be the danger period for those motors. If you get past that then most likely you have a good one.

I don't blame you at all. My rule: Stick with Defenders and avoid Td5s.

Good luck. Getting land rover fixed in more remote places is a bit of a drama. Even in my landy with no electrics, mechanics bauked at it when they realised it was a landrover.

I reckon a patrol auto 4.2T would be my next best choice, then cruiser 4.2T.

    Thanks for the replies,

The new Nissan is a new 3lt CRD, As to the "hand grenade" reputation refer to the Nissan forum and other 4wd forums. One of the Patrol owners is doing a worldwide survey to identify how many Patrols have had probs vs urban myth.
It is quite interesting. So far only a handful have actually been proven and they were replaced free of charge by Nissan some up to 150K and well out of warranty. 1999 -2002 models sound familiar to Disco 2 owners??
It appears the problem was cured by 2002. If you really know someone who has a blown Nissan. Then get them to post on the forum. It has appeared many false reports have come from Toyota Dealerships.
Could you imagine Landrover doing that for the oil pump fiasco???
The survey was done to silence the knockers and go on to prove the true poor performers as the Tojos. Ie) D4D motors always clogging filters,
Independent front suspensions coming AWOL on the 100 series, the gearbox problems on the 100 series etc.
IMHO The truth be known Tojos are probably the least reliable 4WD however their spin doctors manage to keep it quiet as they seem to have the media in their pockets.
As for others comments on the spare parts and tyres. I have never had trouble getting spares for my Tojo and Nissan work vehicles from even the remotest towns. Also the after market selection saves you heaps on parts.

And just to settle a few people I am looking at a Series 1 96 Disco V8 as my new boat towing and camping truck. This will do the dirty work that Mum wont let me do with the Nissan!!!

I don't believe that only a few engines went south as the is a constant line of complaints coming in in all the forums and mags and newspapers and in Europe thier laws governing products forced Nissan to recall all the effected vehicles. Pat

One of my colleagues had a 3.0 Nissan do the motor not long after buying a low km second hand car. He got as far as Qld (from Sydney) on his holidays, pulled and fuelled up. One trying to leave the servo, it failed.

He said Nissan were very good (far better than I'd expect from LR) but his holiday was still ruined as he had no 4WD for his camping trip.

Nissan even paid to replace all the food in the fridge!

The issues people have with supposedly reliable Tojo's is incredible. The Tojo genuine parts (and Nissan are also bad) are way over the top in price.

One thing to watch on the Patrol's is the Alternator. They seem to be good for 4-5 years.

I agree with you about the 3L Patrol issue. There's a lot of them up here and frankly I've seen a lot more problems with engines in Prado's. I will say that Patrol's have the worst Auto transmission rations on the planet for a 4X4. The Navara dual cab, which also comes in Auto has a much better off road gearing.

I source most of my LR parts myself now. As for servicing, Gove Motors, the local Toyota/Nissan dealer is the only choice and they are very good. They used to be a LR service agent before F**D.

There is no way that one guy can do a comprehensive worldwide survey. Even if he did manage to survey every internet 4wd forum user with a 3 litre Patrol that would only be a very small percentage of 3 litre Patrol owners that are out in the real world.

I know the field staff at the last place I worked hated the GU 3l litre utes. They all wanted the Cruiser utes but there were not enough to go around.

Every make has its own problems but I hope the Patrol serves you well.
