i have a 20 year old echo....i'm guessing the bar would be around 18", does me just fine

landyandy is our local chainsaw nutter, although he would use the smaller ones as tooth picks

In my opinion a 16" chain saw would do almost anything will need to do

Thats what i have its easy to throw around , but dont throw them around they tell me it could be dangerous to your health

Get a saw with BALLS.
Like my Husky XP120.Its got a 4ft bar and will run up to 7ft!!!!,120cc of GRUNT!!!
Mate 18" or even a bit smaller is plenty for what you mention.In theory if you know what you are doing and know how to handle a saw an 18" saw will cut thru a 36" log.

I have owned two in my life time and from what you say I would go the 18inch bar . When you buy it get a good quality chain sharpner kit and a file of the correct size .
.If you have never sharpened a saw get some one to explain / show you how to do it correctly, and I useto carry two small metal wedges and a eng. hammer they can be handy if the blade gets jammed in a cut
