cheers for the insight mate. nice of you to share part of your life with us, work takes up a big part of it!
Hey all,
I work at a major mineral refinery here in Perth (wont disclose which) and thought I would give you a tour of the joint. There are no camera's allowed on site (ShhH!) however, I took these with my Nokia N95 mobile phone, which coincidently has a 5MP camera built in!
My job here is an Emergency Response officer, so I have access to the company vehicles ie. Ambulance, Fire Trucks...
The main vehicles we drive are these Toyota's.
I decided to compare the articulation as you can see;
- the Landcruiser is by far the best handler... very capable.
- the Hilux is somewhat quick, but fairly limited due to its lack of articulation.
- the Troopy has upgraded suspension (Old Man Emu, 3500GVM shocks) to cope with the water tank and fire equipment on the back. Quite capable but feels very unbalanced due to the weight.
The Hilux actually had me worried, as with the back wheel off the ground, it wasnt going anywhere - I contemplated calling my boss to drag me out - then I remembered... its a Toyota; gotta lock the hubs
Anyway, on with the show...
The raw mineral comes to us via conveyor, and it is loaded into the Ball Mills, which is crushed up to a grain to begin the refining process... here are the mills;
This is sent over to the "mud thickners" where fluids are added, the mud is superheated, caustic is added and this allows the sand and rock to seperate from the ore, which is what we want to refine... here are the thickners;
Im not 100% on the entire process of refining, but here are some images from around the plant anyway...
This is known as a Falling Film Evaporator;
The main emissions tower - this while area is called "digestion" I think;
Lime is delivered to the refinery 24/7, and it is stored here in the "Lime Tower" . You can see a truck currently unloading the lime;
The refined mineral is stored in large 'warehouses' and long trains visit 24/7 to haul the goods away, it is then usually loaded onto a ship and sold to various clients around the world.
Here is the storage area, and a train loading the goods;
I hope you enjoyed the tour!!! Its a great place to work.
Just for kicks, here is a pic of my adorable girl - she waits for me without fail at the door as I come home from a 12hr shift.
She's an 8yo Kelpie x Alsatian.

Seems like my location has been given up already!!!
Seeing how we are still quite metro, and a town with both Ambulance and FF troops only 10 mins away, we have only basic vehicles.
1x Ford F150 Ambulance, ex St John (5.8L V8 with 3sp Auto - 110kmh it sits on 3700rpm!!)
1x Toyota Troopy (above) - we call it the Fast Attack, first on the scene, always.
1x Hino truck.... its big, its old, and its ugly. Takes forever to start it and get it on the scen. Will be replaced this year hopefully.
2x run abouts pictured above. The Hilux is the Fire Captains ute, other one is ours which always carries 1st Aid, OxySock etc.
Pic of our current fleet.
Left to Right : Isuzu 3-4 (3tonne water 4wd), Toyota Fast Attack (600 litres water 4x4), Toyota Troopy Ambulance 4x4, Mercedes Ambulance (on hire from St John).
Fleet upgrade occuring even though Toyotas are 2004 models, non FRCP compliant. Vehicle Rescue / Hamat trailer due to arrive early March (Paull & Warner), Nissan Patrol Ambulance, twin berth 4x4 due to arrive April (Paull & Warner), 1-4 Mitsubishi Fuso (1200 litres water, twin cab, Firetech 2000, due May). Probablly will order a Mercedes Ambulance as well shortly as we are getting a lot of transfers. Will post pics when they arrive.
Cheers
Craig
