Then theres the issues of higher insurance and every copper on the road looking at you like you are a hoon in a HSV, SS, GT, FPV or similar. Why we settled on the Statesman, better optioned, more power than an SS, cheaper to buy second hand (an SS the same year was same price range), cheaper insurance and the coppers dont give it a second glance. Exactly why we bought the VT wagon too and that would flog a Clubby the same year and model.
My wife really wanted the SS until she drove the Statesman.

I went to trade my GT on a new Jeep in Sydney and they only offered me $47K (2 years old), I was spewing, the salesman took me up the lot and showed me a HSV 300KW (Senator or whatever) same as the $90K one that I had a test day in, they traded it on a new V8 Hemi Jeep (whatever) for $25K. I didn't do the deal cause I thought I could do better, I couldn't, went back to the Jeep dealer 2 weeks later and they would only offer $37K, I WILL NEVER BUY A NEW CAR AGAIN, Regards Frank.
Must have been about the same time. I know the guy down the road from my brother was ropable, for the differenc in price the extra performance was just not acceptable (apart from the extra 30kw) his GT had nothing extra apart from only drivers side key entry only. The ambrose had two key locks driver and passenger, plus some Ambrose freebies as well. The $18K difference was hard to swallow. 30KW increase could have been had for a damn site less. It also seems that cars like the Ambrose seem to retain their value slightly better. At least he got $42K for his 2 years old.
Its like the Statesman, was a $65K car new, 3 years old and we got it for $31k from a dealer (though they were asking $36k). Not to bad value for us but shocking for the guy that traded it in. Only 50k odd kms on the clock.
I am the same, will never buy a new car again unless I become ridicuously rich, which is unlikely.
    Cheers

Engine was standard except for cold air intake and K&N filter (not recommended for off road) + plus Ford upgrade of computer, 320Kws was the result. Engines are bullet proof, they have 6 bolt mains, 4 normal and 2 cross bolt through side of block, block is H/D Ford Lightning truck cast iron block, so you dont have problems of sleeves flopping about like the holden crap V8's do, if you think the XR8 goes then you're right, about or a bit quicker than the turbo six, but it does it sooo much easier, go for it, Regards Frank.
    Hogwash!

    BA GT / GT-P was 290kw..... 5.8 seconds 0-100... And feels soggy...

Certainly aint no "trouser factor" in the Ford V8 range.

Driven both camps, and the GTS 305 thumps the Blue oval into weeds....

And for the record, the GTS with the "hamburger with the lot options" was had, brand new, from the dealer for $72k on the road... A little shy of the $90k being touted...

    Now heres the reality people...

Between traffic lights - who cares.... If someone can beat me to the next red light good luck to them!
On the highway my 100km/h is the same as everyone elses 100km/h

So buy what you want.... New 6 vs old V8.... Warranty etc..

    Mike,
We are getting quoted some different figures. Last pricing I got was :
    Clubby $63k up
GTS $76 up to $90 plus
Grange $83k up to more than $110k
    Senator $78k up
Add on dealer delivery and stamp duty and we are talking another $5k plus.
Sat nav $4k, Sunroof $3k, $3k for the auto Add dvd packages, all the HSV trinkets and its not hard to get to $90k.
Admittedly even off the floor the option list is pretty good and most of us would not get the extra options.

I am contemplating buying a car to do the Horsham / Adelaide trip every fortnight to save wear and tear on the Rangie.
What I would like is a nice stock VH Commodore sedan, preferably red. Then I would fit an injected 5 litre with 5 speed manual transmission.
Decent springs / shocks and bushes would make it ride and handle well.
Walky 16 inch rims with decent tyres would look good.
The highway economy would be acceptable and the performance more than adequate.

Why spend a fortune when that combination could be on the road for around $5000 - $8000 or thereabouts?

Even the Car Of The Year Mercedes starts a smidge under 60k.
Bigjon and many others have destroyed any real rationale behind buying those vehicles.
I'd go back to the drawing board rather than put that much into a serious downward spiral of depreciation in a vehicle that's build quality is sure to bring a very temporary level of satisfaction.
That's for mine, yours may differ.

Yeah, yeah, fords a crap holdens are better, no wait holdens are better, no fords no holdens, Who gives a S#$t.

At the end of the day with any car you can get a good one or a bad one. Old man has an RTV 70000kms and is a fantastic car, my 03 BA is terrible. Heard the same stories about the holdens and landrovers. Yes there have been some quality issues with the BA.

I wasn't after speculation, just facts. The Boss 260 i've found out is pretty bullet proof, just concerned about any other problems. Yes I would probably be better off in a six, but always wanted a performance 8 and this is my short and probably last chance to get into one with low kms (16000) in my budget. If a mechanic says that those motors burn oil and does head gaskets, i'll turn away.

People turn around to me and say oh you've got a Disco, that must be cost you a fortune to keep running reliably, And I say no i'm really happy with it. Some of you have just done the same thing to Fords, "Of they've got really bad build quality" without having owned or driven one.

Sorry thats my rant, I like fords, but at the end of the day i'll get something I feel happy in.

Thanks to all those that gave helpful feedback.

    Stu
