The magazines I've looked at showed that the XR6 Turbo was the better car compared to the V8. Never driven either though.
Went into Ford today to look at an RTV or XR6, within 10 minutes he had me sitting in a 2004 XR8with 16k's for the same price. Now i'm really confused.
What are the V8's in the Fords like (reliability etc...) and is fuel consumption really bad??? Its a work car during the week but a tourer on the weekends.
Arrrggghhhh, now to see the accountant.

I couldn't resist and now i've been for a drive and love it, especially with the power bulge whenever you look out the front window, does anyone have any experience with the XR8's especially on gas.
Will have to sell the disco though

Dad had a 2003 BA Fairmont Gia (6cyl) and while it was a great car to drive the quality was rubbish. Electric mirrors didn't work correctly, electric seats would move to random positions each time you turned it on. The rear A/C vents popped out when you opened the centre console.
Dad got rid of it Nov 05 and got the D3 but the car is still driven by someone at work and I know he's a more problems since he got it. Not exactly the same model but still I wouldn't get a BA again.

Had a 2003 BA GT, clocked up 40K/klms, blew holdens into the weeds, did a 2000klm trip down south, Ocean road and all that stuff, had it up to 220klm/h on a few occasions on them grouse Vic Freeways, always used the 300+Kws and I averaged 11l/100klms on that trip, cruising at 110klm/h computer readout for fuel consumption was between 8l/100klm and 11l/100klm, when accelerating hard would shoot up to 32l/100klm, but as it only took 5 seconds to get to 100klm/h from a standing start, it was worth it. Engine was standard except for cold air intake and K&N filter (not recommended for off road) + plus Ford upgrade of computer, 320Kws was the result. Engines are bullet proof, they have 6 bolt mains, 4 normal and 2 cross bolt through side of block, block is H/D Ford Lightning truck cast iron block, so you dont have problems of sleeves flopping about like the holden crap V8's do, if you think the XR8 goes then you're right, about or a bit quicker than the turbo six, but it does it sooo much easier, go for it, Regards Frank.

I will be up front I am a Holden man through and through, but my pick with the head would be an XR6 turbo. Even most dyed in the wool blue oval fans will admit it is much better value for money and for a long time depending on model was actually quicker than the XR8 (possibly excluding the BA). I seriously thought about an XR6 turbo before getting the Statesman, as they are a really well laid out and balanced vehicle.
Now if you are thinking with your heart, nothing beats the sensation of driving a V8, to hell with the economy. Having said that driving the 5.7 litre Stato at about 110-120 retyrns 10-11 litres per 100kms which is damn good for such a big car. An XR8 Falcon should return a bit better. My brother had a Marcos Ambrose special and that was a nice car.
As for them being better or faster than a Holden, that is tripe and loyalty talking. Realistically they are the same. I mean my wifes VT 5.0 litre wagon would do 220kmph plus as will the Stato.

Frank,
You and my brother should get together and have a big sob fest. He misses his Ambrose Special too. Was a nice car though.
Have to say side by side there is not much in them. I really miss the old days when there was a marked difference between Holden and Ford.
Cheers
Craig
