    LPG Decanting Bottles

    Hi People

In a post by Ron (p38arover) Curses! P38A Problems today, he mentioned that you can't fill up with LPG by the road!

    I'm sure that's not true?

Years ago while at uni I drove a taxi part-time, I remember on a number of occasions getting a radio call to pick up the decanting bottle from a one of the taxi bases to take to another taxi who had run out of LPG.

The decanting bottle was basically a 9Kg propane tank, with a hose. You connected the hose to the car's LPG filler, turned the 9Kg bottle upside down and turned on the tap which put sufficient LPG for the taxi to get to a servo.

Does anyone know about this, or more importantly where to buy the hose?

When I was considering getting lpg many moons ago the LPG man said I could just buy some hose from him and get an lpg bottle filled and get the connector from him also. He said it was quite illegal though and if I were to do this I'd need to keep the hose hidden.

Oh well I wouldn't want to do that then - after all the legislators make these laws, regulations to protect us from ourselves.

Made up by the LPG fitter eh!

You can legally carry a 9kg in a boot, in most states too. Technically you are breaking the in a number of instances ( taxis dont do this anymore due to an incident of the kind ) when you hook up the hose.
Mainly its because the relief valve -which is just under the tap- must communicate with a vapour space and when you turn the bottle upside down it then communicates with liquid, which could be an
    Then the insurance company might

    Anyway, wanna buy a hose??

OK I am a LPG fitter and play with LPG forklifts for a living.
I am often left with a forklift with no or empty bottle on it as the dead ones are ratted for gas by the time I get to fix them.
In my work van I carry a small primus bottle with the correct fittings to get the machine going while I work on it.
Around the workshop I use a 9kg bottle to move forklifts around.
Forklift bottles can be filled by decantering from any bottle or filling from a pumping system (bowser).
Sitting at home with no gas in it is my 101 landy.
I will put some gas in it from a small bottle to drive it to the servo just to save a bit of petrol.
The problem is not every one seems to understand the dangers of transporting LP Gas or how to decant correctly without being a danger to them selves.
Any thing is possible with decantering and a bit of know how.
There are laws to stop people transporting gas or filling bottles so they are not a danger.
The automotive gas bottles have many more safety features than a barbeque bottle and only with these features can they be transported by a car.
Yes I think you can carry a barbeque bottle in the back of a open vehicle..ie not inside or boot and it should be secured in a way so the valve cannot viberate open and it will not move it case of a accident.
You need to get a hold of approved special LP Gas hose and the Acme filler fitting.
The barbeque bottle should be modified so it has liquid withdrawl as turning the bottle up side down makes it illegal as the safety features built in the bottle are in effective up side down.
I get away with it at work and on work sites because it is part of my job.
For the general person on the street dont worry about it as there is a long history for people getting slack and hurting themselves.

Have to agree with you there, even if there is not an explosion, a cold burn on skin is as bad as a burn with fire.

An interesting thing I saw when I was doing a training course in Sri Lanka once.

I work with hydrocarbon refrigerants - basically highly refined propane and isobutane (No its not BBQ gas)

Typically with HC as a refrigerant approximately 200 - 300 grams is used, and during this training class I have one protagonist who was stiring up the class - saying it was dangerous, he was a real pain.

When we broke for lunch - he was leaving for the day, and it was interesting to see

A BBQ /LPG gas bottle - laying on its side - held down with one of those rubbery straps with hooks on the end in the back of his Datsun station waggon, and a flexible hose running through the firewall.

Yep he was running his car on LPG from this BBQ cylinder (maybe 9 - 10 kgs) sat inside the car.............

.....................and he was having a pop at HC refrigerants @ 200 grams.

    I had to laugh .............
