I don't get it, I read the thread and I'm meant to believe the v8 diesel in the toyo 70 series is the reason we see less landrovers on the road? Toyota doesn't give anyone 'what they want' - their marketing department tells you what you want and joe bloggs believes it. That is a marketing guys job, and Toyota's blokes do it well.

I might be wrong, but I would think the 70 series v8 diesel would be the lowest selling of all the toyota 4x4's to the public... there are certainly plenty of others to choose from: the rav4 (6 4x4 variants), the kluger (3 4x4 variants), the hilux (5 4x4 variants), the prado (5 variants), the landcruiser 200 series (3 variants), the 70 series (7 variants) so I really cannot believe the v8 diesel hurts land rover sales much at all.

What hurts land rover is a lack of marketing, a lack of being in the public eye and a lack of respectful commentry in the media. Despite this, Land rover sells plenty of discos, plenty of range rovers and plenty of freelander 2's. The defender is an icon for the brand but lets face facts, it is an enthusiast's vehicle, not joe bloggs choice of everyday transport. Despite this, current production cannot keep up with demand, so why would you promote it? to increase the backlog of ****ed off customers waiting 6 months for a vehicle?

Lastly, what am I meant to see in those photos that I couldn't see in a new Defender 110? stickers that say V8? It looks like what it is - a 20+ year old design rehashed to fatten toyota coffers at a bargain development price, in summary, it looks bland, souless and boring.

Well, this summary came from a Nissan driver neighbour of mine yesterday :

"If I won lotto, the only 4WD on the market would be a 130 DC Defender."

He summerised the V8 Cruiser Vs Defender with :

    Best Articulation - The Defender
    Lowest Cost - The Defender
    Most Economical - The Defender
RPM at 100kph - <2000 for the Defender, 2300 for the V8 Cruiser
Best low range Climbing - The Defender

apparently some of the 4WD mags are saying nice things about Land Rovers lately. I haven't read any for awhile, but there you go, they're shaping peoples opinions.

I had trouble understanding that as well but I assume it is something to do with clean clear water (posts) and life being a bit muddy. The Yarra River is said to flow upside down, mud on top or something like that.

The thing that puts me off the troopy station wagon (apart from the obvious) is the lack of the second fuel tank that the other traditional models have. I assume it has something to do with the seat configuration, but has anybody managed to put a second tank in one. That's a big negative in my view.

There must be a reason why armies around the world have and still use Landrovers. Toyota, Mitsubishi and Nissan owners think only locally (Australia) when comparing the popularity of these vehicles. I’m sure sales of the V8 diesel in Europe will be limited.

Check out the new 76 series Landcruiser, new 4.5L diesel in a retro design, apparently parts of the market wanted this. For around $60,000 your accessories are limited to diff locks front and rear.

Let’s not forget Japans “design copying” since the 1960’s.
