Am I having a bad dream, I've had landies since 1968 and had plenty of troubles crook gearboxes / axles etc. but these TD5 troubles seem something else again. Have 2000 fender converted to auto, no major dramas so far apart from new injector loom and turbo, waste gate stuck open, sounds a good move to put it up blocks and leave it there before something very serious happens

    Graham,
yes there are issues as there are with most cars and engines.
The oil in the ecu is an easy inexpensive fix with either cleaning both harnesses or replacing the injector harness and cleaning the main harnes (plenty of threads on this).
The bolt in the oil pump is rare but again an easy fix, drop the sump and re loctite.
Heads are only an issue if the engine is overheated as in any alloy engine.
TD5s are expensive to replace yes, but prices are coming down. The 18-20k quoted was for a new engine fitted, but can be done for less as can rebuilds or second hand engines.
I have had no major drama with mine, just quirky irritating things.

Has anyone tried that new "you beaut" oil resistant, heat resistant , self sealing silicon tape on a TD5 injector loom?

    Just a thought

    wont work....

the oil creeps along the wires using capilary action......

if you could seperate and seal the independant strads of the wire you might be in with a shot.

so far the best solution appears to be lifting the top of the injector side plug and filling that with sealastic goop.

    [QUOTE=Slunnie;713072]I agree Pete,

Also, the comments in the first post are quite an exaggeration, and from my experiences and probably most others, the TD5 is an excellent and reliable motor. Just like all of the Landy diesels, you must look after it.

yhea ur write slunnie , but l can see his point in that when you buy these things
If you install a coolant level sensor you can safe guard yourself against this.
    you shouldn't have to!!
Oil pump bolts, will have been loctited back in during service,
    you shouldn't have to!!
Injector looms every 2 years??? Maybe. They're about $250
    again, you shouldn't have to!!

l understand what your saying but l think most of the frustration comes from, lf they knew about these prob's then why the hell didn't they fix them!!
a similar frustration of mine was that of the ****ing nylon lock washer they use in the dizzy of the 3.9l V8, to lock the rotor shaft down in place WTF is up with that ??
l now have two extra dizzy's in the garage just to be sure because you cant buy the washer of the shelf without forking out $130 of a new service pack???

    with a sense of understanding!

    cheers

We haven't had any trouble with ours but it is still quite new. I honestly think there are a few issues with them but apart from the oil in the loom they aren't very common.

Also, they issues are pretty well known now. I like that.

I created one of the big TD5 threads with the intention of getting to know it's characteristics so I can work with them

I am absoloutley sick of this anti td5 cr*p.. For Heavans sake Rover v8s have been fuel inected since 1985 odd and people dont bitch about that.

I am tempted to sell mine and buy a gu patrol just to avoid the 'I wish I had leafsprings still mentality' ...

If you want a td5 buy one.. If you dont. Dont.

oooh its got a few sensors... it must have been created by the devil....

This post isnt directed at anyone but things move on and in all honesty the td5 isnt that complicated or unreliable!

These posts on forums just extend the myth that there are more issues that there really are....

    Excellent advice, there, Dave
You should write a book on diesel Land Rover care.

Actually I know how he feels. In some of the td5 threads there are a number of people that have really attacked and said they are useless because they have electronics in them basically.

Its been happening for a while so I can understand this thread.
