My 'fender is also a "99 model TD5, with no issues at all for an old girl, apart from "normal" wear-and-tear items. 186k on the clock and still going where i point her, battlescars galore and a few mods, but i love her.
Like a good dog, you have to take care of a diesel, know her moods, feed regularly and act accordingly, or she will bite you.
This TD5 is my first diesel ever and i'm hooked. With this forum and it's people there is over enough advice and knowledge to keep her going and fix problems - so i know how you feel pete :eek:

Hi guys... Was interested to see what response I got this morning after I had calmed down, and it seems not that many people are disagreeing with me...

Anyone who knows me will know that I am a pretty easy going person but these threads really are basically pointless.

I agree forums are a great place to learn about the cars and their faults, but to start a thread just listing some apparent faults for no reason is not helpful.

There have been some really long td5 threads recentley and one of the mods has started a td5 technical thread with links to all the other ones, so surely thats a good place to start.

Anyway hope I didnt offend anyone, but thats how I feel.

Hi guys

im in agreement with pete (although im guessing a bad mood caused the snap :D ), example being a friend has just bought a TD5 disco II impulse buy cause it was cheap. she called me while i was on holiday saying oh my god what have i done i have just looked on the net and there are so many bad expensive problems with the engine... im thinking of not getting it now. so i had to reassure her that its just the nature of forums and that most of the issues are fixed cheaply.

i also suggested she should look at a 3l nissan and search for piston failure in those, and landcruiser v8's having piston failure also, and then basically searching for nissan and toyota problems and see what they came up with.

suffice to say that she bought the car in the end.

there are a few problems which we all know about and as stated previously are cheap to fix or prevent. things like the harness are almost service items for the $150 ish that they are to replace. Also tho as stated, landrover know the problem so 'should' do the right thing and sort them out, as they have in other countries. i guess im being nice and agreeing with all of you! :D

you do seem to jump on people for making posts that appear snappy, im reading more and more of them. Pete said that it wasnt directed at anyone and i thought it was pretty relavent as there is a lot of scaremongering. my opinion was that your post was at least as irrelavent. like i say my own opinion i dont mean offence, im just getting a little weary with posts going off in to a giant argument and bitching (this isnt directed at you by the way :) ). fortunatly this time Pete just said sorry and got on with it... but a lot of posts seem to get a reaction which is sad.

we are all her for the love of landies and the help of what are a great bunch of guys with a huge wealth of knowledge, and the ability to speak our minds. i for one am getting a little tired of seeing posts being marred by constant sniping (directed at nobody in particular) so lets all just get on with what we originally came here for.. free speech, free info, free humour, friggin fantastic forum.

and yes ron i wholeheartedly agree... this bit is very important to the td5 owner :D hence the reason im here! (although im sure there are some that wish i wasnt!)

I am looking at a TD5 today, now in terms of log books etc is there anything you can pickup by reading through? Those that know me, know I'm not the most technically advanced or mechanically minded. I have looked at this one before and going back for a second look/ drive. Thanks,

i guess just any recalls that have been done, and that it has a full history, preferably by someone that knows what they are doing with landies!

receipts are always helpful for any parts... and i suppose as usual a full inspection being done by someone that knows the td5's so they can check for oil in the harness and anything else that maybe an issue...

you could always get a history check done from the landrover system.. using vin and engine number.. that should list service actions if its been done at a dealer..

whats the details on the car? number of k's age etc etc etc that may help as the newer td5's had fixes so other maybe able to be a bit more pointed...

Thanks for that Steve, it is an 03 Disco TD5, 83000kms, looks like it has only even been a "town" car, underneath is spotless ie no dents, dings, light scuff mark on the front bumper and that is about it,

This post isnt directed at anyone but things move on and in all honesty the td5 isnt that complicated or unreliable!

Just to clarify things the GU Patrol had coil springs not leaf the last Patrol with leaf springs set up was the MQ series
