Ha, went down this road and ended up selling my 200Tdi Manual for a late auto Tdi. It just isn't economically viable unless the market value of your vehicle isn't relevant to you. Ritters will do it for $10,000, probably a little less from LRA but I never got to the point of talking $$$ with them.
- Its riddled with complexities - firstly the 200 auto was in production for a very short time before it was superseded by the 300 auto - as such parts are as rare as hens teeth. We are talking a production run of just weeks.
- a complete 300Tdi auto will not just magically bolt up to a 200Tdi - a 200Tdi auto backplate is needed, part number ERR4612. You need this as the rear main seal housing is part of the case and different to the 300Tdi one. You will not find this part in this country, and expect big $$$ to find one from the UK.
- There are heaps of older ZF boxes from earlier range rovers around, but a V8 box behind a Tdi won't be a nice drive. Have a look at the ZF shift road speed engine speeds data - you'll notice immediately why it wont work.
- If you do manage to find a 300Tdi specific ZF, there are still heaps of little bits and pieces that add to the overall cost that are harder to find - kick down cable brackets, the correct shifter for pre MA vehicles, oil cooler hoses, the oil cooler, a different brake pedal, the wiring harness for the transmission warning light (and on my vehicle and most pre MA vehicles, all the wiring is not in place and the printed circuit did not have provision to easily add the warning light), inhibition switches, dipstick and tube... etc.
- LR experimented with a TF727 behind a 200Tdi early 1989/1990. You can buy kits to put a 727 behind a 200Tdi but I'd imagine the result would be a wrist slashing drive
.
hope that helps

LRA quoted $5.5 - $6k. They did need the plate.
Thanks for your advice. I'll keep it on manual.
