    Series 2 adaptions and transplants

    Hi all hope some people can advise me having looked up sites dealing with engine transplants and am considering a 200series tdi minus the turbo for now has anyone done this transplant. If I'm going to search for a donor 200 Tdi Discovery, would there be any other components on it that would be good to transfer over from it, ie. brakes gearbox diffs etc. I do not wish to get too carried away as anything is possible. I would like to get it on the road sooner than later and enjoy it. Any advise from anyone out there on practicle adaptions to make my 2a SWB a good daily driver would be really appriated.
    I believe that if the turbo is not on the 200 tdi motor I will not need to get a engineers certificate for the modification as it does any one know if this is the case in Victoria or else where. Which is why I shall leave it off.

    This topic has surfaced before - search 'series engine transplant' and even one of the UK mags, Landrover owner international are doing exactly what you want, called project Red shed.(page 207 Feb issue)

    However, there are a couple of things extra you should know about: First, the 200 Tdi's can run without a turbo, but you would need to make up a custom exhaust manifold, and then reset the injector pump. Far simpler to transplant the whole thing.

    And, a good point by L-o-Landies: 200 tdi heads and associated bit are very hard to find. If can find a donor 300 tdi, use it ( The whole drivetrain in fact). It will almost all bolt in, and the mods required are small.

    Then, of course there are the non-LR engine swaps to consider.

    The 300tdi wont bolt straight up to the series gearbox like the 200tdi will though.

    I don't know ... but I prefer the original engine for a Series ... It's just my opinion ...

    Garry,
    I believe you need an engineers certificate if you increase the engine capacity or power by 10%, or if you are going from petrol to diesel or visa-versa. If you want to put the gearbox/transfer case in as well, I believe you will need one out of a 200tdi defender, so that the gear lever is in the right place. With the 300tdi gearboxes, the bell housing and input shaft will make the transmission too long. But if you do put an LT230 transfer case in, you will either need to get a Stage 1 V8 front axle so you have CV's, or will need a part time 4x4 conversion for the LT230. All this can be done though, as Beven Fenner has an 86" Series 1, with a 2.5 petrol, LT77 gear box and LT230 transfer case, but I can't remember if he put a stage 1 front axle in or got some custom axles made to go into the series 1 housings. Also to put the LT77 and LT230 in, you will need to fabricate up gearbox/transfercase mounts.

    To get a 300Tdi in, I believe you just need to do a bit of filling of the a couple of the holes in the bell housing of the series gearbox to make it fit, as Anthony Johnson had one fitted to his light weight, before the power stroke went in.
