    Defender Alarms

    Folks,

I live in an inner city Melbourne suburb of Northcote - and we don't have off-street parking (goes with the territory of needing to live near the city for my line of work ). Just this evening - my g/f caught a druggy scumbag robber type "casing" my 98 Defender Tdi . It wasn't admiration. Coppers were notified. I am guessing that the druggies were after the UHF, IPFs or they thought I was dumb enough to leave the satnav in.

I want to equip with an alarm system to deter. Anyone any experience of after markets - reliability, cost, compatibility with a defender brand etc ? Clearly no point in the central locking type !!

    Thanks Pommie

I can't recommend an alarm, but given the area, you could try parking with the transfercase in neutral or low range, and even wire a switch into the engine cut off wire at the back of the fuel pump.

I realise the main risk is breaking in & stealing, but I had a SIII stolen in Doncaster a few years ago! It was the first one the insurance assessor had ever seen stolen!

I had an aftermarket alarm with a movement sensor and central locking put in the RRC a few years ago, but on the Defender I'd avoid the central locking as it can be problematic.

A cheap and easy option might be this LED from Jaycar.

If you can find some stickers that say this car is protected by an alarm you get the benefit of the deterrent of an alarm.

Club locks are good - though they have fallen out of fashion recently.
They may not do a hell of a lot, but they'll make it easier to steal some other car.

Some alarm kits come with the central locking system too. The alarm & central locking all operate on one remote.

I've used a Rhino kit before (not on a Defender) & it works well.
